I imagine a burrowing people would have a pretty good sense of direction and would speak up if they weren’t sure (certainly Digger would). Ed is not from such a people, though he’s still cute 🙂
i love the little alchemical light-sticks Digger uses with a *snap*.
I can’t put it into words, but the lighting is amazing in these. Especially with Ed in the first frame. He almost looks like a chalk drawing. http://topwebcomics.com/vote/10180/default.aspx
You saying that made me think it too. Whenever you come to a dead end in something like this, there’s ALWAYS something blocking your way when you try to turn around.
Those tunnels were pretty confusing even before Digger broke out into Ganesh’s temple. Sooooo yeah, it’s no surprise Ed is confused.
I don’t know that they’ve hit a dead end though. It just looks like the light is in front of them in panel 2. Also Digger doesn’t at all look worried…well more worried. And if it were a dead end she’d have definitely said something or made a face.
Ack! Got a phone call in the middle of typing that last comment, and forgot part of what I wanted to say:
I suspect that, given her innate underground instincts combined with the fact that she’s been here before, Digger knows exactly where she is and where she wants to go. The fact that some builder-of-inferior-earthworks changed things and put up a wall between her and her destination is beside the point.
Digger is used to working in low light I would imagine. While this is a nervous moment, I can’t think of anyone better to have a Digger’s back. Somewhere in my bones I knew it would come down to a Digger an Ed moment against the world.
If anyone here reads “Zap!” (by Pascalle Lepas and Chris Layfield), Calle has asked me to help spread the word that her hosting company suspended her account for using to much server resources, with no warning. She is quite displeased [paraphrased], and is working feverishly to get the old site back up temporarily (http://www.zapinspace.com) until she can get the new site (http://www.zapcomic.com) forklifted to a new hosting service.
(Ursula, if you happen to know Calle, and have any suggestions for a hosting service, I’m sure she’d appreciate the suggestion.)
Before anyone asks, I don’t have any direct way to contact Calle myself; I only managed to make contact through a sort of back door, using the Disqus system “Zap” uses for comments.
I don’t think it’s a dead end, Digger’d be reacting somehow if it were. Ed’s just naturally nervous– He’s used to open space or shallow caves, not deep earth. I think the light is hitting a turn, especially since they’re still moving forward.
Yes, I remember I thought the drawing was great on the first comics. Looking back now it seems evident Ursula has gone from great to awesome art. First comics looked more like toon characters, now they look more dramatic and have a depth on their own. Not to talk about the shadowing and background work. If only Digger would last 10 more years…
About the voting thingy
#43: Housepets!
“Objectively better than the comic below”
Guess who is still #44 below right now 🙄 So. Go vote NOW 😉
Just the look in Digger’s eye in that last panel sayes to me: Ed, there’s really no way anyone could be certain of going the right way in these tunnels. They’ve been magicked all to heck so there’s no real way of knowing which directions we’re going. But you’re sweet, I’m sorry I got you into this, and I don’t really have the heart to tell you were were lost the moment we crawled in the hole.
Vote, vote, Vote. 44 and holding. The comic just above Digger’s caption reads, “Objectively better than the one below it.” To this I say, “In it’s pen and ink dreams.” Vote because Digger needs you.
…probably?

to say “I have a bad feeling about this” really doesn’t some up my sense of foreboding….
(why do i get the feeling things are about to get trippy)

#45 as of my post, btw!
Oh! Somehow I didn’t catch that they’d hit a dead end in the second pane until I read the comments.
Spidersense (er, Wombatsense?) tingling!
I love the way Ed’s body language and gestures – the way he’s looking around – convey his nervousness …
Don’t forget to VOTE!

i don’t believe that’s a dead end. more like Ed just not being used to navigating with no landmarks other than the dirt that surrounds him.

I was concerned that the ways have changed. After all, as Digger said in the last comic, “Someone’s been digging down here.”
I’m pretty sure that’s not a dead end. The glow-stick’s just really bright.
Digger’s at 44, by the way.
I’ve asked questions like that before. Usually when my dad is driving.
Next we just need an ‘Are we being there yet?’
Unless there’s been some *signifigant* alterations, it should just be a tunnel.. at least until it pops into the Skins’ caverns.
“Digger mousie not even sure were she was *coming* last time she crawled this hole”
Digger: 9 votes to get to 43 now.
Why can’t you draw like this all the time? 😉
