Say, does anyone remember long ago, before one of Digger’s website moves, there used to be a number of footnotes on some of the comics? I remember one about Ursula having a collection of tongue-statue masks, and another about how ‘skin becomes lizards, breath becomes butterflies’ was based off a real set of legends. There was another about the vampire squash, and also one detailing how the proper way for a certain cannibal tribe to eat a captive was (kept for up to a year, given a chance to make a big speech about how scrawny the people were while they listened and clapped, then hit on the head ans fried up with bananas).
Maybe Ed should teach Ganesh-Statue the meanings and myths behind the tattoos, he certainly seems curious enough about it.
Also, if Ed is at the temple and has been for some time, I wonder if Jhalm already knows Ed is there. If so, then I wonder how he is going to explain accepting ed there while giving the rest of the hyena tribe a hard time.
I find it ironic how last time we were up in arms about Jhalm, he turned out not to have done any real harm, and now we’re waiting for him to show up with a battleaxe. As somebody else said a couple strips ago, from his perspective, he’s done nothing wrong. Not that I’m on his side – the hyenas didn’t ask him to keep the peace. Heck, I don’t know if ANYBODY (but the Veiled) asked him to keep the peace. He’s overstepping his authority, but he’s doing it for (apparently) innocent, even benevolent, reasons. I’m a lot more worried about what SGV is up to, personally, now that he knows with what and whom he’s dealing, at least to an extent. Even more worrisome to me is the absence of Shadowchild, who, to our knowledge, is the only one (besides the Veiled) who can hurt the old-as-the-earth demon. Murai is most likely going to see it as her duty to kill or free He-Is (since she IS technically one of the Veiled), and I’m curious to see what Digger thinks about that.
Knowing the priests who are loyal to Ganesh and his statue, they probably volunteered. Also Ed doesn’t strike me as the type to force anyone to get their skin painted.
Oh, and as regards hyena tattoos – I don’t know about Ursula’s hyenas, but real life hyenas have large areas on their bodies where there is little to no hair – including around the jaws, the throat, and the belly. So there’s likely to be places where hyena fur is thin enough to allow relatively easy access for skin paintings. Also we don’t know for sure that they don’t trim the fur, we just have never seen them doing so.
It’s also interesting to note that we can finally put the “temporary dye” vs. “tattoo” debate at least partially to rest: GS (Ganesh-Statue) clearly says “tattoos” here.
@Hawk- Are you sure they volunteered? Ed has an adorable way of forcing things upon you in the most polite way possible. Like with the warrior’s tea. He simply insists upon it, saying that you just need to have it. I’m sure he’s the same way with body paint.
I’m too lazy to look it up at the moment, but I remember one of the covers to an earlier volume showed one of the winged rats….with tattoos? Could have been a foreshadowing of Ed’s current work!
I JUST realized something! Just a few days ago, my new thing was to say “shocking” in a sarcastic way! I did something cool just as Digger was doing it! *sqweel!!!*
One thing I’ll note: As a “servant of all the gods”, Jhalm also serves *dark* gods. I suspect he’s being coerced toward “balancing” the local situation somewhat for the sake of the cave-hyenas’ object of worship.
smjjames: Since the Veiled serve “all the gods” there must be other human gods (and thus presumably other temples) besides Ganesh. My impression is that Ganesh’s temple isn’t Jhalm’s main hangout, he just drops by from time to time. He’s a busy man, especially having brought in a bunch of Veiled from elsewhere who don’t know the territory and thus will need more supervision than his “usual” underlings…I suspect he hasn’t been by Ganesh’s place in several days. Which means he’s about due, yes, to walk in the door and find Digger and Ganesh engaged in sinister plotting with one of the hyenas…
@Sarah. Yup, they’re gone. Now, there have been some new ones since then that are up, but if you want an example, go check on the ones about the Vampire Squash – I know exactly where that one should be and what it should say, but it isn’t there and doesn’t say it. It should be around here: http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=658
Hey, y’all, I’m not one to push for this sort of thing normally, but Digger is like half a dozen or so votes shy of the top 100 on TopWebComics; so let’s have a weekend voting push and get her up to page one! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/10180/default.aspx
Finally finished up with the archives and I can safely say I have found a new web comic to follow.
Once I clear out some of my book queue (which is too long to allow me in good conscious to purchase additional literature) I will be ordering some of the books as well.
@ macdjord … yes. It was all i could do to resist the urge to put them back up in the comment bar. with archaeologists, after a while we tend to get truly obsessive about preservation through record. I think i have them all saved on the word document were i back up my comments here.
and thank you Jewelwolf, you just spawned a Digger/Father Ted crossover fanfic with Ed vs. Mrs Doyle in the 100 yards “you’ll have some tea now” race. And to think I was saving that hard drive space for my GlADOS/Cortana “Thelma and Louise in Cyberspace” Fic (to be honest that had Digger in too… she seems to have a cameo in all my crossover fic’s now-a-days).
Yay! Ed’s useful!.. wait.. oh dear..Oh, she didn’t… *sigh* Cue Jahlm in 3.. 2.. 1…
@Kevinbunny: … dammit. You’re right.

I miss those. I’d like to see them restored.

The footnotes are gone? WAAAAH! i loved the footnotes…
They weren’t as cool as Ed, but they were cool. (“Nothing is as cool as Ed!”, mutters the sixteen-year-old from stage left.)

This page was entirely too “D’awwwwww” worthy. 🙂
Why, Digger! What a delightfully inauspicious shadow you have standing right behind you!
macdjord — they were here last time I read through the comic…are they gone? Sadness!
And awwww….Ed is useful!
I need the first panel of Digger saying “Shocking!” as an icon. Now.
I wonder how much convincing had to be done on those priests to get their new tattoos. Did they volunteer, or were the coerced?
@Barry: Ed doesn’t strike me as the coercive type. Convincing and persuasive, perhaps, but definitely not coercive. 😉
@everyone: Don’t forget to VOTE! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/10180/default.aspx
Digger is currently at #111 in the ranking; I bet we can get her into the top 100 before the weekend!

Oh, dear…. she didn’t just say that, did she?

Is it just me, or is there a shadow hangin’ out behind Digger?
I love Digger’s sarcastic face as she says “Shocking!”
I’m too lazy to look it up at the moment, but I remember one of the covers to an earlier volume showed one of the winged rats….with tattoos? Could have been a foreshadowing of Ed’s current work!
Maybe not so lazy….it was volume 4.
Of course she said that. That way she doesn’t have to go looking for Jhalm. Thanks to the Laws of Narrative Causality, he’ll come to her

*Cracks up laughing* I’m imagining Ganesh’s tone of voice in panel two and there’s just no way it doesn’t come out hilarious.
Peace Through Superior Body Art! -:D

**beams** All those bald heads would make GREAT tattoo-canvasses; our gentle Skin-Painter must’ve been just itching to get to work.

#99 right now 😀
Keep it up. I am curious to see how high can a wombat go :p
At a glance, only 4 of the first 50 comics do not have a vote incentive, so technically Digger is now #17 of non incentivated comics.
@macdjord: Holy crap, they’re gone? But I liked those…. ;_;
@Mark Antony: So did I – thus the whole ‘petitioning for their return’ thing.

Is Statue going to be sporting some new body paint his/its-self? I’d bet Ed is just itching to paint his trunk.
Oh No! i have only been reading this story for a few days and it ends?!? I have to wait?!
at least tomorrow is tuesday…
