Murai’s character is sort of loosely based on this deranged monk character I played briefly in a MUD way waaaay back in the day.
Try not to lose all respect for her now that I have revealed her shameful origins, I beg of you.

This is where I started originally. I saw this cover on DevArt, and I thought “hmmm…. nothing better to do tonight.” Similar to tonight, really.
So. THAT’s how the veil connects to the ponytail.

… as a MUDder myself (don’t sneer too much, please) I’m driven to ask … which mud was this?
I encountered a MUD only once in my lifetime. It only resulted in myself being hopelessly lost and confused for several hours, before finally giving up, my brain upside down from a combination of simply not understanding and the distinct inability to comprehend spatial information without visual input.
So the fact that you not only played it, but played it enough to have invented a rather complex character with it ONLY affords you the deepest respect from me. You may as well have said, “Murai isn’t original; she’s based on a friend of mine with whom I helped slay I dragon. I hope you can forgive me.” 😛
I LOVE roleplaying games in just about any form. And creative, even off-beat characters are a must for me. So yeah, I get it.
(And for the record, a MUD addiction was partially responsible for me dropping out of my first try at college.)

I love deranged RPG characters. I can probably count on one hand the number of characters I’ve made over the years who would have actually been able to function in civilized society.
I have recently created a new character based loosely on Jhalm, with a few elements of Murai thrown in.
He’s not precisely deranged (though many others seem to think so), but he’s definitely got, shall we say, a unique world view.
The GM (my father) was originally totally nonplussed by the idea of a warrior-priest who serves all of the gods. He has since grown to love it.
As a long time roleplaying gamer and husband of a (not yet online) webcomic artist and writer I love when characters can cross the lines of various media. Each telling of their story is a new opportunity to learn more about the character.
Tek- yeah, I had a similar issue with mudding and college. I’ve balanced life/game a bit better now.. but Ancient Anguish still counts as home.
How fab, to be able to slash-and-spell with your dad! Do you ever DM for him as a character? My 1st year at Uni was enlivened by paper-pencil-dice role playing, as well as other new and interesting pastimes, some even legal, and a not-entirely disimilar subset still part of my life.
I have DM’d a game with my dad as a character once or twice. It was fun, and he enjoyed it, but I definitely prefer the other side of the DM screen. I’m a fair hand at creating fun & unique characters, but when it comes to storyline I can barely handle a few embellishments to a standard module …

I see no reason why that should be considered a shameful origin, or devalue Murai in any way.
Alas, my lack of facial recognition skills prevent me from being able to tell if that is Jhalm or Murai. I had assumed Jhalm, but the eyelashes are kind of long, but they’re not all /that/ long, but the expression could be Murai being tense, but the expression could be Jhalm being pensive, but… but… etc.
@TekServer: I’ve never managed to keep to a standard module. I’m an old GURPS bunny, and the first two bits of GURPS “Generic” and “Universal” are my favourites. A while ago I worked out that Steven King was not about to dive though the front window and attack me with a broom-handle if I ran a campaign openly based on “The Dark Tower”. If you have a fantasy setting with cowboys, someone will play as Roland Deschain, why fight it? You’re not profiting from it, you don’t claim to own it, you’re never publishing this setting, and no-one outside the game will know so copyright don’t in any real sense apply. Module books, to my mind, are there to be looted for NPC stats and convenient rules when making a “fanfic” campaign based on whatever you just read, be it the Dark Tower, the First Law Series of books by Joe Abercrombie, the Old Kingdom trilogy by Garth Nix, Pern, Neverwhere or other Gaiman, or Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell.
That said, I’d advice against “GURPS Redwall”. It does not end well. Especially if you bring you’re latest home-brewing experiment along to get everyone into the correct October Ale quaffing mood.

@ Bunnyrock: Speaking as a fellow Redwall fan, I’m now interested in making a GURPS Redwall, just to see how it turns out. So thank you very much for putting that idea into my head. 😀
Additionally: According to the Redwall Recipe Book, October Ale is simply a mix of grape juice and ginger ale; I forget the ratio of the mix, but I recall it having a very interesting flavor.
