  1. Jatopian says:

It also saves one the trouble of always remembering it later for consistency.

  2. Rowanmdm says:

Notice Digger says “bite you in the knees” rather than the human version of “bite you in the butt,” which makes sense since getting bitten in the buttocks wouldn’t hurt wombats.

  3. Xyon says:

Also, having an injured knee would likely be equivalent in terms of inconvenience, since they spend a lot of time in tunnels, on their knees.

  4. BunnyRock says:

Huh. I’ve always had the Nanny Ogg approach to the truth: I am scruplefully truthful unless I can think of a suitably entertaining lie. As a rule I don’t lie, even by omission to save face, avoid trouble or dodge the consequences of my actions, but I will outright lie for fun, so long as I can’t see anyone getting hurt by it, or to protect others if I think they need it (which is by far the riskier path). This circumstance calls for the truth, however if i were digger, around the point where Liberian Vo said that a past scholar had reported that wombats reproduce by swallowing stones and earth until they have enough to lay a new wombat, I’d have be hard pressed not to tell him that was what actually happens out of mischief.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, this sort of thing has been a bigger problem thought the history of anthropology than you’d probably think.

Or to summarize what BunnyRock said with an old adage from my family, never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I don’t necessarily tell the truth, but I don’t lie (except when the lie is pretty obvious, and either joking or sarcastic). I’d explain that it was the liver of someone who gave me their permission, I can’t digest liver or other meats, and that Shadowchild can ask for more details or explanation if it wants more.
