You should know, we named our kitten Ed, because his name tag was eaten off of his little paper collar in the shelter. Ed is quite possibly my absolute most favorite character, ever, and this comic makes me SO HAPPY. ^_^
@Tindi- There’s a website called zazzle.com where you can put a picture and/or a caption on a t-shirt and buy it. I’m sure you could make some Ed shirts there.
3 years you been building up to it. We may all have seen it coming, but that has done nothing to lessen the impact of Ed telling off his peoples biggest Bogeyman. Nothing can take the awesome out of that!
@Old Prof. Otter: Quite welcome! Always nice to see another filker. I go by M’liss at cons (though I don’t get to many); feel free to say hi if you ever spot me.
We may’ve “seen it coming,” but only because we *wanted* it to be there. The narrative power of awesome! (Sometimes something you see coming is *excellent.*)
(Also… Ed is a hero already; a sacrificial one, defending his child, but still.)
I wonder, does Ed think/realize he’s avenging every dead firstborn child? Including his own? Without SGV (and without He-Is listening to Sweetgrass Voice), how *different* hyena life would have been… (Yes, I am taking legend for fact here. I think I have cause!)
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to ask, but Ed was named for the other ‘lucky’ one in The Lion King, wasn’t he?
(It’s been a fact in the back of my head long before I read Digger that Shenzi and Banzai’s companion was retarded because he was a surviving firstborn… and doesn’t Shenzi mean ‘She-Is-Fiercer’, anyway?)
I found out about the comic from that io9.com review… I have also managed to read through the archives in the last few days, and I have to say that it was a wonderful trip so far. I am glad that I was at least able to learn about it before the storyline wraps up!
Now though, I am but a tortured soul along with the rest of the readers… Even more so, as I haven’t gotten ‘used’ to the Tuesday/Thursday updates (as I’ve read a page or three a minute throughout the entire archives!)…
May the remaining story be as glorious as the rest of the tale!
@Rowan: It’s a good writeup, if a shade spoilery. But when I got to the end all I could think was ‘Another poor sod who thinks the number at the top of the URL has anything to do with the page number. ^_^’
Also, for the first time ever (since last time I read through this was still on Graphic Smash) I’m current. I’m not sure if I should go to the dripfeed method, or just stop reading untill next year given Ursala thinks it should be done by christmas unless things don’t go to plan. This is perhaps the worst possible time to have come current on the story.
And on a related note, I own books 1-5. While some of the art is more striking on paper then it is on moniter, and the extras at the end of the book are nice… I’m not sure I’d have enjoyed Digger as much without the comments section.* You guys know TV Tropes lists you twice, once for being genius and once for being loonies, right?
Never before have I found a webcomic that has entertained me enough to write a comment…and I’ve read hundreds of both mainstream and exceedingly-rare strips in the past…but yours is truly epic and deserving of my continued attention. I’ve literally read through your entire archive in the last 5 hours while at work and I enjoyed it much more that any world-famous author I’ve read recently. Keep up the good work! I’ll be back in a month or so to see what happens.
@Zelith: who do you think put a good part of that page the there? A webcomics TV Tropes page is an important thing, you didn’t think we commenters would leave that sort of thing to amateurs, did you? 🙂
I’ve had that TV Tropes page as my home page for over a year.
Wow, talk about one of the coolest web comics I have stumbled upon in years!
Started reading and couldn’t stop. Ended up reading the ENTIRE start-current in one sitting.
(rubs sore bum)
I have just one niggle with this page. This page, and the ones immediately preceding, were current at the time of my first, slightly truncated run through the archives (i.e. before work finally caught up). Have you any idea what it’s been like, running through in the knowledge that this was waiting, trying to avoid spoilery forward references to such a line as “Has a name! Name is Ed!”?
I halfway expected Ed to yell something along the lines of “Give me back my father, you son of a bitch.” She-is-Fiercer may have kept the firstborn, but SGV likely was the seed of madness that stole Blood-eyes’ mind, and hence robbed Grim Eyes of a childhood raised by her the Little Skin-Painter.
Suck on THAT, SGV! Ed is not being a trash-person!!
You should know, we named our kitten Ed, because his name tag was eaten off of his little paper collar in the shelter. Ed is quite possibly my absolute most favorite character, ever, and this comic makes me SO HAPPY. ^_^
YES! YOU GO, ED!!!
HE SHOOTS – HE SCORES!!! [email protected]=E
XD YES!!!
This was Ed’s “THIS IS SPARTA!!!” moment.
But will it end that way too? Let’s hope not! Alas, I fear a tragic hero’s death for poor Ed. :C
Oh yes! Way to go Ed!
Ursula, you should publish at least your own comments, some have been very good additions to the story.
Are there any digger inspired songs/filks? I am trying to craft one, and would like to see prior art.
I don’t CARE if we saw it coming! GO ED GO!!!!
And I almost squee’d at 1 am. I had happy happy face there. 😀
Oh, and I want that on a T-shirt like NOW. “Ed–is– ED!” Squee squee squee.
Atta boy Ed! you tell ’em!
@Tindi- There’s a website called zazzle.com where you can put a picture and/or a caption on a t-shirt and buy it. I’m sure you could make some Ed shirts there.

Hahaha, a t-shirt with the last panel on it. Nobody would get it, but I’d bet they’d still think it’s cool.
Heh, yeah, we saw it coming, but that doesn’t make it a mite less awesome to see it on the page ^^
@Old Prof. Otter: I’ve got one in the comments here:
http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=824
Unfortunately the tune is a damn obscure one, but there you go. (Also, I got Ursula’s birthday wrong and posted a week early. Oops. 🙂 )
OH MY GOD.
This was the most epic moment EVER.
*hugs Ed*
………….
WIN!
The shadow demons expression is sooo epic… It’s like…

Add this to the already-lengthy list of Ed’s Crowning Moments of Awesome! *dances*
Oops I posted on the wrong date. I meant to say we could always rename Ed, “Dances With Crowbar”
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
…
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It’s a beautiful moment. GO ED!!!
I always knew that Ed was a hero. Now Ed knows.
Thanks Madam Atom.
I have copied the whole including your attribution/info.
Thanks again,
Otter
You know, I do believe SGV has been pwned!
@Old Prof. Otter: Quite welcome! Always nice to see another filker. I go by M’liss at cons (though I don’t get to many); feel free to say hi if you ever spot me.
They call me MISTER Ed!
The last panel should be set to this right at the 3:50 mark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MWxAAQoNiw&feature=related
I would just like to state for the record that Sweetgrass Voice’s look of shock and dismay in the last panel is completely and utterly priceless.
Go Ed! Give him the what-for for She-Is-Fiercer, and above that and all else, for yourself!

Hey, Digger got a great review on io9! http://io9.com/5665091/the-peculiar-pragmatic-adventures-of-a-wombat-engineer Congrats Ursula!

Maybe we’d be surprised if there were more than two lines of dialogue on a page.

Bunnyrock, rocking the entire internet.
Also, thousandandone’ing what everybody has said here. GO ED!!!
Ps. wrong homepage link in previous comment. 🙁
And that one.
*hides* Dunno what was up.
Also, the moment I saw Ed getting a crowbar, I knew the crowning moment of awesome was near. 😀

Totally worth it! Can’t wait to read more =)
ED. just…just ED.
