A crowbar… are we going to see Helix manifest occasionally, wearing a suit and carrying a Black Mesa briefcase?
But yes, crowbars are excellent adventuring gear. Good for cracking open things that have been abandoned for centuries, and makes a superb back-up weapon for close combat.
I loved both the last two pages. Though the final line on the previous page was better than “we endeavour to please”. So excited at the moment to find out what happens next!
Ursula is going to draw Ed… with a crowbar O_O 😀
D’oh! well back serious things. A crowbar is not obvious deicide gear, but more like let the god free tool. Still waiting for the work theory behing this. looks interesting
I don’t think that’s the seer. I think the god Ganesha spoke was in the statue earlier (not just the hand) and is now acting through the seer. We’ve seen the same speech patterns from both, and from page 796 (statue speaking) to 797 (seer speaking) it’s clearly the same dialogue.
> prepare for unforeseen consequences
Not necessarily unforeseen, especially if the slug advised them to offer the crowbar … 😉
> An artist with a crowbar is more dangerous than a ferret with opposable thumbs.
Maybe, but a kender with a crowbar is far more dangerous still …
Don’t forget to VOTE! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/10180/default.aspx
The more we vote, the higher the TWC ranking gets. The higher it gets, the more likely it is that Ursula will get new readers and ad-clicks coming from TWC. The more benefit she gets from TWC, the more likely she is to put up a permanent vote link, and maybe some cool vote incentives. So go vote, every day, and encourage all your friends to do so as well!
After this explanation I am quite sure the oracle slug has been talking with TekServer about the voting thing
😉
It would be more normal to let Digger do the cracking, but I also suspect they will need the combined strenght of both with the crowbar and the pickaxe to break the god’s shackles even if weakened by age and magic.
However if he saves the day and climbs up out of a pit covered in ichor and wielding a crowbar, it’ll be one of the most simultaneously badass and adorable things ever.
Daaaaamn; I’m impressed. First time I have EVER seen an adventurer go out properly armed. Crowbars not only are useful, they’re intimidating as all hell. And they’re a pleasing shape; they’d etch up beautifully with a little acid, maybe in a knotwork pattern or something…?
A crowbar is pretty much an ideal tool! Lightweight and durable and thus easy to carry, and with a great many uses, the least of which is busting heads. A practical being like Digger can surely appreciate that. 🙂
Shovels can be similarly pragmatic, but they tend to be a little unwieldy.
A crowbar! Love it! This actually makes sense, if you remember that one of the attributes of Ganesh is “Remover of Obstacles”; a crowbar is much more useful in removing obstacles than a sword — especially if the obstacles aren’t flesh and blood. Now the only question is whether it’s a true crowbar (about 6′ long with a heavy end that has a chisel edge) or a prybar (one of the curved things used for pulling nails and fine carpentry).
“We endeavor to please.” Priceless. You can see Digger just ready to pitch into a towering rant about whatever it is, and then being forced to admit that that’s not a bad idea. I was thinking it had something to do with the shackle as well, jassius. 😀
TekServer: ‘Prepare for unforseen consequences’ is a HalfLife reference, and should be delivered in a stilted, off-cadence manner, as if the speaker is unfamiliar with speaking *human* languages…
Bah forget HalfLife. A crowbar is a rather useful LEVER and WEDGE, and on the short hooked end even a FULCRUM. This would be why Digger who is an engineer by both nature and profession would think it useful. Seriously you can do a great deal more with a crowbar than use it as a mere cudgel, and frankly Digger’s pick is far better suited that particular task.
I love the crowbar. I just finished a Harry Dresden Book where one of the characters took a bad guy out with a money wrench. Also Congrats on best Character slot Ursula.
@AlpineBob: What could ever damage a crowbar? In Halflife you can swing it at any object no matter what material and it never breaks or even cracks. ;P
Well, I have completed my archive-dive-facepalm-count. It was more difficult than I thought, given that some gestures on some pages were open to interpretation on whether they were truly facepalms. So I made my best judgment, and made notes along the way, and will now post the results in two parts: this explanation, along with the current total, and then my copious notes. The notes are long, so feel free to skip them if you don’t care to read, check links, argue with me about judgment calls, etc.
And so, without further ado; the current facepalm count is:
113
Most of these are by Digger, but many are by other characters, including Murai, Grim Eyes, Helix, and even one by a minor character with no name.
YES.
crowbar sounds more useful than a sword, in all honesty.
AlpineBob wins the comments 🙂 –Except I’m pretty sure it’s an at-least-mostly non-magical crowbar.
Now all Ed needs is an HEV suit, a goatee and Phd from MIT and he’s ready to save the world!
This comic was greatly entertaining because of the previous comics; on it’s own it would just be “so-so”.
*Replace second “comics” with “comments”.
Now all Ed needs is an HEV suit and they’re good to go.

haha…..
Murai wins at deadpan

Well, I guess we now know what Ed’s old name was…
I have the same thoughts as jassius. I can’t wait to see Ed with a crowbar.
And that line “We endeavor to please.” is so absolutly perfect. I love it.
prepare for unforeseen consequences
An artist with a crowbar is more dangerous than a ferret with opposable thumbs.
I think I’m a little in love with the acolyte now.
And my hero cry shall be – CROWBAR!!
That’s the most awesome weapon, I mean tool, I mean…oh it’s just awesome!
Now I want a pin with the acolyte on it!
Well THAT was kind of a letdown, but Digger’s right, it’ll still be useful.
*snicker* The tone of voice I hear the acolyte saying “We endeavor to please” in is cracking me up! Also… CROWBAR!!!! Brilliant! Very wombat-like.

OH ED
If Ed dies in this I will be VERY TRAUMATIZED.
However if he saves the day and climbs up out of a pit covered in ichor and wielding a crowbar, it’ll be one of the most simultaneously badass and adorable things ever.

I can see Ed busting some offensive Kung Fu moves with that crowbar, and it it AWESOME.
I’m not sure what Ed would DO with a crowbar. I mean, he might move a rock or something, but he’s not a violent person in any way.
@theysabet I love your idea of etching the crowbar
I love the layers of sarcasm in the acolytes voice 🙂
they’re waiting for you in the test chamber, digger

Darn, I was guessing “magical spork”
lol, Digger is grumpy, doesn’t want to be pleased with anything, but… gotta love the crowbar!
“We endeavor to please.” Priceless. You can see Digger just ready to pitch into a towering rant about whatever it is, and then being forced to admit that that’s not a bad idea. I was thinking it had something to do with the shackle as well, jassius. 😀
only this webcomic would have a crowbar at this point – I love it! <3
But what about the roll of duct tape? [email protected]=Q
Excellent! No adventurer should ever be without a crowbar.

Ah, yeah, here’s the relevant clip.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk8IdP-upKY&feature=related

For me the best part is that they wrapped the crowbar in cloth.
Crowbar: a REAL wombat’s weapon.
Crowbar for the WIn!!! *bows to those assembled*
Gotta wonder why it’s all wrapped in swaddling, though.
Don’t want it to get damaged? 😛
Crowbars and pickaxes, great if you’re fighting zombies too. To bad the star lug wrench has not been invented yet for our heros.
Uh, I swear, ONE Zombie or Half-Life reference and…… Actually, that sounds need “The Free-ed.”
Crowbar! Of course! Ah, gotta love the smirking acolyte.
I love the crowbar. I just finished a Harry Dresden Book where one of the characters took a bad guy out with a money wrench. Also Congrats on best Character slot Ursula.
@AlpineBob: What could ever damage a crowbar? In Halflife you can swing it at any object no matter what material and it never breaks or even cracks. ;P
@Lucius Appaloosius: Digger undoubtedly has a lot of it in her pack already. No idea how she’d have gotten this far without it 😉
It’s a monkey wrench, monkey wrench! I feel like such a goof. Great big L on my forehead. Your series is incredible Ursula.
