Digger

Also, today is my birthday. I’m thirty-two, and I get to draw stuff for a living. Life is good.

Happy birthday U.V! :B Hope you have an awesome one.

    /quietly goes back to lurking

  2. Brushtail says:

Happy birthday, and I love Mr. Helix’s last line on this page.

  3. Arcaton says:

Happy Birthday to you, wonderful lady, and thanks for an excellent strip….
    I was 53, 3 days ago.

  4. Torakoun says:

    Happy birthday!

Gotta love wombats. “He’s a god, but no sense holding that against him.”

  5. BarGamer says:

Given Helix’s sensibilities, the question basically is, “How do you feel about murder, or even assisted suicide?” I imagine it will be about as hard as eating liver.

  6. Malin H. says:

Wow, it feels strange to have reached the end of the archive. This is the greatest comic I have read and I don’t really want to see the end of it coming. But when something is very good it’s usually not a good idea to draw it out forever either. I could definitely go on reading this for quite a while though!

A very happy birthday to you and your life sure seems good! If I get to draw for a living when I’m 32 I’ll definitely be happy.

  7. TΓ‘ssia says:

    Happy birthday! πŸ˜€

Deicide… our new word of the day hehe πŸ˜›

  8. Otookee says:

    Happy birthday, Ursula!

I think the situation is more like “unplugging the life-support from someone who attempted suicide and wound up comatose”. It’s still a morally difficult question. More to the point, though, would be demonicide. We want to get rid of Sweetgrass Voice. Would the death of He-Is kill SV as well, or set it free? Conversely, killing SV (and its cultists) would presumably allow He-Is to lapse into death as well, since their interference is what’s keeping Him alive.

  9. Samuel A. Falvo II says:

    I wish I could draw for a living. πŸ™

  10. Hawk says:

Borrowing a computer to read Digger, heehee…
    Happy Birthday!!
As far as our moral question, I agree somewhat with Otookee, in that killing off Sweetgrass Voice and its cultists seems to be the best solution. From there, you can THEN tackle the deicide morality issue…because once Sweetgrass Voice is banished, how much you wanna bet that He-Is no longer needs so badly to die?
What if Sweetgrass Voice has, all this time, been whispering thoughts of despair into the mind of He-Is…just enough pride in those whispers to keep He-Is from ever attempting to reconcile with She-Is-Fiercer? What if, once that influence is gone, He-Is remembers how much he loved his mate?
Perhaps I am a hopeless romantic to see such a thing as even a possibility. But, if I am, I have no shame in it πŸ™‚

  11. Dawn says:

Happy Birthday! Thirty-two and a career artist. How I envy you!

And I’m all up for deicide. πŸ™‚

  12. Chris says:

    Happy Birthday!

  13. ngΓΆgam says:

Many happy returns of the day!

  14. VND says:

    Happy happy Ursula !!

Deicide? Never like them too much! πŸ˜‰

  15. ysabet says:

Deicide. Huh. Think they’re gonna need something a bit bigger than a handful of nails and two sturdy wooden planks for this one…

Happy birthday to you! May it be the thirty-second of a great many, and may you have at least three cakes!

  16. Mishal says:

    Happy Birthday!

*coughs* I’ll be the first one to say it.

The plot thickens. *thunder crackles in the distance*

  17. annie says:

Happy Birthday – three days later than mine, but mine came a lot earlier than yours….I was 78!
Keep up the good work, I thoroughly enjoy your little fellow.

  18. Griz says:

    Happy Birthday!
I love your art, thanks for sharing with us.

  19. alondro says:

    Happy Birfday! :B

    Digger must decide about deicide!

  20. motub says:

Happy, happy birthday! I wish you a joyous day, a fulfilling and prosperous year, and many more of the same therafter!

All this, and you get to use the word “Deicide” in a sentence… spoken by a wombat!… as well! It can’t get much better than that on your birthday (but here’s looking forward to even more fun)!

I hope there’s a way to end He-is’ life without also ending the Shadow Child’s. Even though Shadow Child may well be the demonic aspect somehow “split out” from the Mad God, it seems like the very act of splitting it out (however that happened) has somehow returned the Shadow Child to innocence, and granted it some form of free will (the chance to choose between acting instinctually according to the presumed evil of its nature, or acting by its own choice, hopefully according to the pretexts of some presumably good/positive code of action).

if that is indeed the case, and the Shadow Child is truly no longer limited to only behaving like a mindless demon, it deserves the chance, like any free-willed creature, to make its own choices (for good or ill), and shouldn’t have them taken away from it beforehand.

  21. Niall says:

Many happy returns! I can only be gleeful at the thoughts of what you’ll be producing in ten years’ time, with your added knowledge and life experience.

This story is not about happy endings, but about what’s right, and the complications when two sides do what they believe is right… and things are about to get Ugly. Nothing’s off the table. I think about the only character we don’t really care about is Sweetgrass Voice… and I’m not putting it past Ursula to achieve even that. πŸ™‚

  22. CJ says:

    Hippo Birdie Two Ewe!

I think Digger won’t have too much problem with the morals of deicide. When they started off, she said something about performing a mercy killing on a god. The bigger problem is going to be how?

  23. Kira says:

Whoah! Really?!? It’s my birthday too!!!!
    I’m 21.
    Happy Birthday!

  24. ursula w says:

    happy birthday!
from one ursula to another =)

i frame art for a living, i’m glad you have a career you love as well πŸ™‚

  25. Terry says:

Happy birthday, and that is a magnificent closing line. (:

  26. CharlieLyons says:

    Happy Birthday, Ursula!
Keep up the good work and keep being absolutely brilliant. For instance, that closing line, totally brilliant. Just like every other line you’ve ever written. Love you!

  27. Lindsay says:

Happy Birthday! LOVE Digger, and am always looking forward to the next comic.

  28. Gramina says:

I think I’m with Altizer on deicide — it’s the only way to go πŸ™‚ OTOH, the results aren’t necessarily what one would expect by parallel to homicide or suicide. …Who knows what may be freed in the death of a God?

  29. Gadora says:

    Happy birthday!

  30. the42yearold says:

    I’m 42 today – I don’t draw and got too many things that all need a do-ing.
Was hoping for the winning powerball, but I woke up to more things to do that did not involve the winning of $222 million – which would have made life REALLY good.

Keep on doing what you enjoy.

  31. Kelci says:

Ahh wombats. I love them so. Right to the point. Also, happy birthday!!

  32. KNO3 says:

    Happy birthday! Great webcomic!

  33. Hamor says:

    Happy birthday indeed!

I follow the same thought line as CJ: It’s not the killing of a god that would be a morral issue to Digger, but the how, as gods are notoriously hard to do away with…

  34. Jessi Malatesta says:

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY URSULA!

  35. Aelfwine says:

    Happy Birthday!

    As for the comic:
    The plot doth thicken!
I’m even more curious to see how this turns out than I was.

  36. Miranda Whitehead says:

Happy Birthday, Ursula! I agree with Hamor–it’s not the act, but the how. After all, Osiris was chopped into pieces, and he came back. But he was a good guy, as far as I remember. Who knows what Sweetgrass Voice has up it’s incorporeal sleeves?

  37. Takma'rierah says:

    Happy birthday!

Also, Helix’s speech bubbles over the stone texture is a bit difficult to read; may be something you want to edit at some point. P=

  38. rylen says:

    Happy birthday!

I see the usual shape of the story. Digger and company return home and talk about euthanasia. Capt. Jhalm wont stand for it. Some sort of clash with anger and sacrifice.

But this Digger isn’t the sort to follow a script. My hope is that she breaks the myth and breaks the story. That somehow He-Is can be separated from Iago and Ed can return home.

I’ve read a lot of speculation that Shadowchild comes from He-Is. Could he (she?) be a fragment of All-of-Tribe-In-Two’s child?

  39. Kayru says:

    Happy birthday!
I’m glad you enjoy it because I’m absolutely loving this story. Best wishes!

  40. Coyoty says:

Get George Bush to do it. He’s the Deicider.

    Happy birthday, Ursula!

  41. Lica says:

    Happy Birthday, Ursula!

  42. Sage says:

    Ohcrap! Happy birthday! A couple hours late. I am a terrible fan. ;.;

  43. inlaid says:

    Happy birthday.

  44. Lachesis says:

    >>Get George Bush to do it. He’s the Deicider. <<

thankfully, i had just finished my cereal. i’m sure it would have been BEYOND painful to snort Cheerios out my nose. :O

and adding my wishes of Many Happy More on the birthdays, Ursula. i turn to Digger before any of the dozens of on-line comics i look at daily. even on days when i know it’s not being updated, just so i can re-enjoy the art and wit, and see what new comments may come.

  45. gewitterwind says:

    Happy belated birthday πŸ™‚

  46. BunnyM says:

    Happy birthday Ursula!

Way to run a cliffhanger, though.

“…how do you feel about deicide?” *dun, dun, DUUUUUN!*

  47. Lucius Appaloosius says:

Deicide? Nasty stuff: stinks to high heaven, gets into the water supply, and it’s been proven to cause liver damage in dryads. Best to use a good, old-fashioned godswatter….. 7X=Q

  48. Lucius Appaloosius says:

Oh, and Happy Belated Birthday, too…… 7@=e

  49. KibyKat says:

Happy Birthday! *does the happy birthday dance*

  50. Sarah says:

Many happy returns of the day!
