  1. The Kings Raven says:

Something’s been bugging me about this, what stops them from just getting a large team of veiled to go down there and fight the cold servants? without them the heart stops, problem solved.

  2. diTaykan says:

Hm. Wonder if Sweetgrass Voice would get hold of Grim Eyes if she went down there.

  3. EveryZig says:

The point of He Is binding himself was to keep Sweetgrass from doing that kind of thing… Still, they DID say the chains were almost broken…

  4. Ozark says:

Wait… is Sweetgrass Voice the Shadow Child?

  5. David. says:

That “young Quartzclaw” in panel 2 raises, erm … unfortunate … associations in my mind. At least the chances of Descending Helix shooting lightning-bolts out of his fingers are vanishingly low.

  6. ysabet says:

Okay, just wondering, but… where IS the Shadowchild during all this, anyway? >_>…

  7. Serena says:

What’s the date of the comic where the hyena origin myth starts? I need to go back and read it again.

  8. alondro says:

I’m wondering if Shadowchild is another ‘backdoor’, a creation of the imprisoned one to be used to escape later.

  9. Hawksong says:

I sure hope that Shadowchild isn’t going to get taken over by Sweetgrass Voice.
Perhaps there is some way, however unnecessarily convoluted, to resolve some of the conflict for the hyena tribes. Maybe by bringing He-Is back somehow?

  10. Niall says:

They’ve been confering in a room filled with darkness. Shadowchild IS listening. I’m surprised he hasn’t manifested itself yet – but then again, he just found out his origins.

Yes, I fear he is prime candidate for being taken over by Sweetgrass Voice. Perhaps even was meant to _be_ Sweetgrass Voice but something went wrong and he came from the bird, not the god made flesh again…

  11. Sabreur says:

While it’s safe to say we don’t know too much about Shadowchild just yet, it might be wise to wait for some solid evidence before assuming he/she/it is actually the embodiment of evil.

  12. Hitch says:

Agh…that’s it, digger needs a wiki. I can’t keep track of all this in my brain anymore.

  13. Raigne says:

Agree with Sabreur. I still think Shadowchild has something to do with He-Is’ baby.

  14. inlaid says:

I agree that shadowchild coming from a dead bird and being a demonic orphan implies that he’s linked to Sweetgrass Voice, but I doubt he’ll turn out to be evil.

By the way does anyone know if my subscription to Graphic Smash is still supporting Digger at all or do I need to go through the donation thing on here?

  15. SSpiffy says:

Finally! I’m caught up. Now I can go back and read the comments that all of you spoiling, foreshadowing so-and-sos left. 🙂

  16. Sgamer82 says:

I think this explained the Veileds’ desire to try and free the god. They’re the outside force.

  17. Zack says:

I’m not sure the shadowchild is linked to Sweetgrass Voice — it did hatch out of a dead bird, but that seems to have been shortly before it met Digger. The story we’re being told took place over a thousand years ago. Also, the dead bird in question had white feathers; kingfishers are blue and red.

  18. Kef says:

Now that i think about it, the idea of the Shadowchild being linked with Sweetgrass-voice is very obvious. So obvious that I don’t think Ursula writes that way. I’m sure whatever she has in store for us is far beyond anything we could predict. Still, its fun to speculate. 🙂

  19. Wombat32 says:

Well, Zack, if you look at it this way, a thousand years is probably nothing to a god, might even be the incubation period or something like that…

  20. Dreams_of_all says:

    This is my interpretation/guess–

The shadowchild is a newer Sweetgrass Voice, a sort of uncorrupted version of him–and with Digger’s (well-intentioned if not perfect) guidance, my guess is that the eventual decision Shadowchild makes about his future is going to be a little different than Sweetgrass Voice’s.

  21. ysabet says:

Continuing with what Wombat32 said, the kingfisher’s *specifically* mentioned as being ‘the color of ashes’. Ashes tend to be grayish-white. And who says he was only hatched a short time ago? Maybe he’s been around for ages, but nobody’d talk to him until Digger came along.

  22. ortonmc says:

The oracular slug could have been talking to Shadowchild for ages, but we wouldn’t know.

  23. Tindi says:

I refuse to speculate. I trust that it will turn out somehow.
    I am enjoying reading the quibbles though… ^^;;

  24. EveryZig says:

Shadowchild seems to be completely different (in terms of actions) from Sweetgrass… but there IS the danger of Sweetgrass giving Shadowchild “advice”.

  25. Werrf says:

Ysabet – it’s not directly stated that Shadowchild was recently hatched, but it seems likely – he’ll talk to anyone with little warning or provocation, yet Snoutgod, the veiled, the priests and everyone else Digger has met have never heard of him before. Yes, it could be that it took him a thousand years to hatch, but I’m not ready to call it a slam-dunk just yet.

  26. KNO3 says:

Sweetgrass Voice blocks the light and casts a shadow. That is what I think shadow child is.

  27. Amarys says:

Was the kingfisher white? Maybe shadow child is not a demon at all, or rather, is a NEW demon from He-is, the demon of the God’s death. Maybe SC is meant to battle SweetGrass voice.

  28. Ralph says:

I believe in a link between Shadowchild and Sweetgrass Voice, because of these two pictures:

http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=52 shows Shadowchild frightening away the hyenas.
http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=185 shows Sweetgrass Voice in the He-is myth.

They aren’t quite the same–stretched-out-Shadowchild has spiky bits around the jaws that Shadowgrass Voice does not. But they are similar enough, even in dentition, that I do think there is a connection.

  29. Diddu says:

I think shadowchild will eat sweetgrass voice; the shadow on he-is’s heart! 🙂

  30. S says:

Serena — it’s June 28 2007. I just went back to reread it myself.

  31. Rachel says:

@S Thanks for posting the date of the He-is/Sweetgrass voice story. It helped immensely to reread it. Of course then I had to go and reread the last few pages, but it all makes so much more sense now!

  32. Mental Mouse says:

The Kings Raven: Because from what we’ve seen of the leader of said Veiled, he (and soon, they) would be utterly doomed in the face of Sweetgrass Voice’s manipulation. And then it would have a crowd of Veiled working for it….
