  1. Jon says:

There’s something kinda cute about how Grim Eyes interacts with Herne.

And so very totally normal about how he reacts. Yeah, pretty obviously human.

  2. Sil says:

Does anyone else think Grim Eyes is trying to flirt with Herne?

  3. jitai says:

    I sense that something bad is going to happen ;__;

  4. bA nAn A says:

    i do Sil ^_^

  5. Anonymous says:

XD Grim Eyes is really adorable. Yeah, she does seem to be flirting with Herne

  6. BunnyRock says:

Herne is in for a surprise then….

just out of interest, WHAT season is it? If it’s autumn it could be “too late in the season” because a winter front may be coming in, but Herne’s comments on the “snow being rotten” and it being a bad time for crevasses suggests spring, during the melt.

  7. Eugene says:

I also suspect spring. Which gives us the comic’s first indication of where in the calendar this is taking place.

  8. Barry says:

I seem to recall at the beginning of the strip that it was late spring.
Let’s see — a week or so, all told, with the hag, a couple days with Ed, and a couple weeks on this trip. That puts us in early or maybe as late as mid summer.

  9. Barry says:

Confirmed: Digger arrived in the temple in “late spring.”

    “Less talk, more walk.”

This is going in my personal collection of favorite useful sayings …

    😉

  11. Mad Luc says:

Gimmy was *totally* flirting. Kind words… helping him… com on. She thinks he;s cute.

  12. alex says:

Which opens up some interesting questions. Herne’s “My grandmother was raped by a deer ” joke, along with everyones reactions to it, implies that it’s possible for cross-species relations to bear children in this world. So what in the world would hyena-person/dear-person hybrids look like? The child would the 25% dear, 25-50% human, depending on whether the hyenas have any human genes in them, and 25-50% hyena, depending on same. Not to mention being one of the most awesome children in existence.

  13. capnq says:

It only implies that people /believe/ it’s possible, actually. The “deer” also could have been a god in disguise, like in the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan.

  14. rueyeet says:

Grim Eyes isn’t necessarily flirting. Remember that Digger’s oath in joining the hyena tribe included a bit about protecting all the men and children — Grim Eyes is probably responding like she would to any male, thinking he needs her help and protection, since she’s one of the fierce and mighty hunters and all.

Not that the thought still isn’t hilarious, of course. 😀

  15. Matanui3 says:

Swear to god? Which one, Herne?

  16. Raccoon says:

Hmm. Reverse-gender chivalry between Grim Eyes and Herne. I think it’s kinda cute.

  17. JET73L says:

    She liiiimes him : >

If I were a betting person, I’d put three-to-one odds on them falling down a crevasse into a temple or other space with a god or demon in it, five-to-one on them meeting a god in any way, and seven-to-one on them meeting a demon or other spirit in any other way.

Before my page navigation messed up and didn’t send my post (why I usually copy long posts to the clipboard or a wordpad document), there was an unexpectedly long tangent about how demons may be the same sort of thing as gods, but possibly in an inverse way (gods=creation, demons=negation [in a force-of-nature way], think of the Brahma-Kali relationship and how Kali’s skin is supposed to be as black as pitch). I’ll post the idea in full if I can find a Digger forum after catching up on the archives, or failing that, start or continue a Wild Mass Guessing page for Digger on TV Tropes.

I expected it to be sort of early winter based on the vampire squash – after the harvest but not by much. What kind of squash ripen in late spring?

    …balkanized vampire squash, apparently.
