Stunning. Simply stunning. I’m just after finishing this sequence, Ed’s story, and I am,,, I’m run out of words for it, ‘struth. Brilliant doesn’t half cover it.

  2. linda says:

This story breaks my heart every time I read it.

  3. WuseMajor says:

I find it interesting how, in some ways, it is very similar to the story of She-Is-Fiercer, but it is also the opposite.

  4. Lica says:

This is one of my favorite parts of the comic, it’s so powerful and moving… Ed’s story is incredible in every sense possible. I remeber coming every thursday and thuesday to read the next part of the story, and every page totally full of comments and theories…

  5. BlueAloe says:

So what happened to Ed’s little one? If Blood-Eyes was killed, and Ed is exiled, who raised the little one and is he/she still around? *very curious*

  6. Tindi says:

I have the same face on that Digger does right now. Dammit, I KNEW it wouldn’t be a happy story, but but…oh, Ed.

  7. Ix says:

Blue Aloe: It’s mentioned earlier that Grim Eyes is Blood-Eyes’s daughter – which, combined with Ed’s story, makes her Ed’s daughter too.
Considering how together Grim Eyes seems to be, it’s possible that Bone Mother raised her.

  8. NigaiAmai Yume says:

So, we have Owl-Caller as Ed’s Uncle, Grim Eyes as his daughter, and the crazy warrior women.
Where does Bone-Claw Mother fit in the family tree? I almost think she’s Ed’s mother, but she doesn’t act like Owl-Caller’s sister, and is too old to be his grandmother – PROBABLY…

  9. Archangel Beth says:

Mentioned *indirectly* that Grim Eyes is Blood-Eyes’ daughter. That Bloodmare was the mother to Bloodtail and Blood-Eyes, and grandmother to Grim Eyes. And that Bloodtail was rejected in favor of Blood-Eyes, and that Grim Eyes has good blood on the father’s side, thus shaking the family madness.

Pretty obvious, but talked-around, since they can’t really mention Ed.

  10. lukjad007 says:

    ;(

    Digger’s face says it all.

  11. Lica says:

I guess, being the all-organized, no-non-sense kind of creatures wombats are, Digger was particularly shocked by the story, this kind of things probably don’t happen in wombat society.

Now, to add to the discussion, in the “CAST” section of the page, the description of Grim eyes mentions her relation with BoneClaw Mother : “Grim Eyes the hyena is a member of Ed’s tribe, granddaughter of the matriarch, Boneclaw Mother”. I’m pretty sure, Boneclaw mother is not the mother of Blood Eyes, can she actually be the mother of Ed as NigaiAmai Yume suggested?

  12. Stig says:

    *sniff*

  13. Eugene says:

    Digger’s expression is heartbreaking.

  14. Sammi says:

I don’t know about Boneclaw Mother being Ed’s mother. She acted more like a really close old friend than a sister to Owl Caller, and more like a concerned old friend when she spoke about Ed. What we do know, however, is that hyenas have adoption rituals. That the ritual for adoption is so developed implies that it happens not infrequently, and since mortality rates during hunts and wartime probably rob many hyenas of their mothers, I’d say the adoption ritual is relatively commonplace (at least enough that it needs to be emphasized as not to be taken lightly). I think that Boneclaw Mother adopted Grim Eyes, since her mother was dead, her father was cast out and her other grandmother was nutters.

  15. Mark Antony says:

I tear up every time I read Ed’s story.

  16. BunnyRock says:

well, when Digger looked like she wasn’t going to eat the liver, Grim Eyes said that would have dishonoured Boneclaw Mother as Digger is lent Bonecalw Mother’s status by adoption. Grim Eyes seemed very concerned about Bonecalw Mothers status being hurt, although her main problem was the insult to a member of her Hunt. Its perfectly posible Boneclaw Mother adopted Grim Eyes, probably as a favor to owl-caller and to keep her away from Bloodmare and Blood-tail.

Or, there is another rather awkward possibility. The Hyena kinship system may not recognize the difference between grandmother and GREAT grandmother, or between Grandmother and Great Aunt. In which case Boneclaw Mother’s comment , “May She-is-fiercer forgive me, but her death was a great relief to me” about “That bitch” Broodmare, Bloodtail’s mother, becomes rather more worrisome. Because if Bonclaw Mother isn’t related to Ed (we know all her brothers are dead so she’s no sibling to Owl-caller), then she’s got some very serious problems with her immediate family.

  17. Hunter says:

    Poor Ed…

  18. Tindi says:

Third time through, and I’m still sobbing.

  19. Tindi says:

Thought that just occurred to me (probably to stop the sniffling): Boneclaw Mother could be the mother of Blood Eyes’s FATHER, who is never mentioned, as well, or Ed’s father. The males aren’t really talked about a whole lot, but both Blood Eyes and Ed had to have two parents each to come into being, yes?

  20. Misley says:

    Someone needs a tissue.

  21. JET73L says:

*guh* Digger sad for Ed. Feel… I feel very sad for who-would-be-Ed and Ed, and for Digger, hearing this story from her friend about his past…

  22. AngelicDirt says:

    … … … ;_;

  23. westrider says:

I remember reading this one page per day, back when it first came out. Tore my liver out then, and it’s just as rough now, reading it for maybe the third or fourth time, all in one go.

  24. TekServer says:

Doesn’t get any easier with further repeated readings.

    😥

  25. Draco Dei says:

The last two sentences show that Ed recovered a good bit.
