Ghanesh’s statue also pegged her as a wombat after she’d left the first time. I’d have to reread to see if He/it addressed her as such without her specifically saying so, after that first meeting, but I know He/it used the word without prompting at least then.
All granted, but you can say that Trader Manuel is (probably) the first non-oracular, non-divine being to address her as such. (At least, as far as we know he isn’t oracular or divine … )
to be honest, the slug knew he/she was going to meet a wombat from the prophecy, so just went up the the first unfamiliar vertebrate and presumed (correctly) that it was a wombat. The Statue of Ganesha recognized her from a description it but wasn’t sure as he’d never met a wombat.
also no good can possibly come from the scary downwards pointing face-mask…
er, no, in this case I’m pretty sure it’s just an extended bandanna with eye-holes. As you can see in the third panel, his mask lies quite flat against his chest. I will not deny, however, that plague doctor masks are pretty damn spiffy.
Oh, okay, I take that back. It’s not a bandanna, but it also definitely isn’t a mask of the plague doctors. Those were much thinner and had a more seperate nose
Creepy. He appears to have four fingers on each hand, knows too much and talks exactly enough to give you a taste of how much he knows without releasing his hostage knowledge. Also, I have a phobia of plague masks, which his bandana-mask looks like from the front. I already feel wary of him based on who or what his character could be to the story and am intrigued by him for exactly the same reasons.
Returning to the comic, three years later. Okay, yes, the slug didn’t “know”, but rather made an educated guess. It still addressed Digger as “wombat”, though.
nice mask. Wonder who’s under it
Interesting… first one that’s addressed Digger by her actual species name, I think. Even Ganesh first called her “burrower”
Yes, looks like he’s the only one who knows what she is.
Not true! The slug knew!

…which isn’t really a safe assumption. His secrets are pretty unspeakable.

Doctors used to wear similar masks to ward of the Plagus, they stuffed them with strong-smelling herbs to keep out any malignant homours……….I think.

Beacon80, The slug only knew because the leaves told him.
He’s reminding me of someone, but I’m not sure who…
Its like an upside down KKK mask…
…or something.
And yeah…I’m pretty sure he is the first person to know, for sure, that Digger is a wombat. The Snail had to ask.
Murasaki, it was an oracular SLUG, not a snail, slugs have no shells.
That’s MR. …uuuh That’s MS. WOMBAT to you!
who you callin’ wombat, womble?

@VJ: great, another spray of ballistic tea hits my monitor. Well done!

Returning in 2013 to re-read this for the third or fourth time and am struck by the superficial resemblance to a spy from SPY VS SPY in Mad magazine!
