The contrast between Ed shrinking down in on himself as he makes his tentative suggestion and Grim Eye’s close up as she snarls is both brilliant and heart breaking.
Aw, Ed! Ed needs a hug more than any hyena I’ve ever seen. Which isn’t saying much since I don’t see tok many semi-anthropomorohic hyenas (the only ones that would properly appreciate a hug), but still, he /really/ looks like he could use a reassuring hug.
In rereading this for the umpteenth time, it has only just struck me how brave Ed is being here. You can clearly see that, among all the other emotions in the swirling maelstrom, the fear gripping Ed is overwhelming: he’s terrified of going against his taboo and interacting with a non-exiled member of his former tribe. But he plucks up his courage, and offers Grim Eyes a safe haven – probably knowing that her only likely reaction is rage and disgust.
Bravo, Ed.

And of course, bravo Digger for not putting up with Grim Eyes crap. (Even though Grim Eyes’ reaction is understandable, and perhaps even justifiable, within the context of her hyena culture and upbringing.)
