I think that is the sound of a pickax tenderizing a shoddily-made hammer, possibly made of wood. After the hammer is no more, however, the bandit will regret getting into a fight with a wombat, to put it mildly. One other thing, what if the crossbow was shoddy? Pull the trigger and it breaks? or worse, it explodes in your face! But no, it is at the very least, functional. I now utter a preemptive, sympathetic OW.

I’ve wondered about that pick axe “smack”. I’ve swung a pick axe before, though admittedly never at a living target, and it seems to me that doing so in a nonlethal manner would be … unwieldy, at best.
