CatsbyMoo, you’ve been playing too much Curse of the Crimson Throne! Shame on you…
For my part I wonder who exactly turned him into a bird, and when digger is going to get around to asking.
Gotta love the Trolls. I wonder where Surka’s hanging out. I absolutely love the Bandersnatch. How come D&D doesn’t have Bandersnatch as a mounts ’cause that’d be cool?
That is quite possibly the least frumious bandersnatch I have ever seen.
Clever way to fire Chekhov’s Gun there, of course. Both the trolls and Shadowchild conspired to help Digger find her way home…though I have to wonder at this point if Digger will actually take this opportunity. IIRC, didn’t she say she was probably already considered legally dead and her possessions/burrow/etc. handed off to her next of kin? (Then again, that didn’t stop Bilbo Baggins…)
There is a distinct possibility Shadowlescent developed a sense of humour, to ask in his old way like that. I’m sure it learned a lot about what to eat and not eat.
A most excellent capper to Digger’s adventures. She made friends who care about her, and will take that chance to help her. Yayyyyy!
I should probably ask – are those meant to be huge teeth, or a sideways mouth (like an arthropod)? I’d always assumed the latter, but I’m just curious.
I sense the Bandersnatch learned to speak the same place as the Skin Lizards. Does anyone else find it odd that Trader Manuel refers to the Bandersnatch in the singular, “…Into its heads,” but the heads speak as though they were individuals, “It asked if we could talk.”
I am bursting with more happiness than I can rightly express.
The epic hero has to change, yes? That’s how it works. But what change could we ever want in a pragmatic wombat who takes care of herself?
This one! At the end of the day, its not her own efforts that get her where she needs to go, but the love of the people she’s influenced.
Here “unnecessarily convoluted” path has gotten her where she’s going more surely than a direct route ever would.
What’s going on here is less trite than I’m making it sound…my apologies…I just love what you’ve done more than I can rightly express.
Ah, Shadowlescent is proving to be rather a clever creature, if indeed it arranged the conspiracy to hold Trader Manuel up until Digger returned. Of course, it’s also likely that Surka had a paw to play in the set-up. I don’t think the trolls themselves did… I think putting a slice of meat between two slices of bread and calling it a sandwich is beyond their mental capacity.
The trolls here are much nicer than those of Sauron, at least! ;3
Mani – well, the Bandersnatch is from the ‘Jabberwocky’ poem, from Alice Through The Looking Glass, and while it wasn’t seen, the Jabberwocky looked like this. http://minniebeaniste.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/thejabberwocky.jpg
So I’m pretty sure that’s teeth, on influence. Incidentally, that picture used to scare the crap out of me.
I checked back in the archives (took a while) and found Manuel again. He did have that handerchief mask, but it wasn’t that big as shown in the first panel.
FWIW, here’s the first time we see Trader Manuel — http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=487
(we see his wagon one earlier than that, but this is the first time we see *him.*)
About bandersnatch mouths: Those things instantly read as teeth to me, to the point where it hadn’t occurred to me that they might be anything else. Today I realized not everyone saw them that way, so I took some time to figure out why.
My husband has sometimes had a snail or two in his aquarium, and when they ate algae off the tank sides, we could see those little flat white teeth scraping the glass. It was pretty neat. (They still freaked me out when they BREATHED, though. “Where was it KEEPING that tube?”)
I’m afraid I will have to bid you all farewell slightly ahead of Ursula (if my guess on the timing is accurate).
You see, I’m Catholic, and Lent starts tomorrow. Webcomics, including Digger and several others, have become a near addiction for me, so I have chosen to make webcomics my Lenten sacrifice this year. Had I any control over the timing, I would hold off until after Digger was finished. I guess that’s why it’s called a sacrifice.
😉
Anyway, even if Digger ends before Easter, I will come back on Easter Sunday (or maybe shortly thereafter; I doubt the family will let me read webcomics all day on Easter) and read all of the remaining pages, and all the comments, and reply if I feel like it. I have little doubt that the Digger Archive will be around for quite some time, and archive trawls and revisits probably won’t stop happening any time soon.
Remember Tunnel 17! Wish me luck, and I’ll see you all in 40 days.
(P.S. Barry’s in charge of vote reminders, and BunnyRock is in charge of fascinating segued dissertations. No, I’m not delegating duties; I’m just making observations … )
😉
It’s always been dusty, musty travelling on long journeys over unpaved trail…and then there’s bandersnatch butt (single, plural?) pretty near ur air intake…filtration is a precaution of a wise traveller.
With friends like those… who has enemies?
ShadowTeen is ALIVE! Uh, well, not alive in the conventional sense… but you can’t really say dead…
…
…
ShadowTeen is BACK! ^_^;
Yay, Shadowlescent is aliiive!
*Ahem* I’m getting a strong Spy Vs. Spy / Plague Doctor vibe here…
Shadowlescent 🙂

Vote, vote, votey, vote. http://topwebcomics.com/vote/10180/default.aspx
That is quite possibly the least frumious bandersnatch I have ever seen.

I want to see more Surka, once last time! Before the story ends!
This is the best page ever. I didn’t expect to be saying that so soon after the last one.
Yay! Trolls and shadows! This a great page! 😀
Hooray! It seems Digger’s friends have been looking out for her.
Trolls in bridges and polite shadows stopping him.
*conspiracy* I tell you !!
*groan*
Now, if only Digger happened to have a hand to help with trolls and such they could both return home… 😉
I actually stood up and shouted “YES!!!” when I read the last panel. Absolutely perfect!
@ Iburns: Looks t’ me like he has a handkerchief with 2 eye holes cut in it. (thought it was a bird beak at first too)
I love this. And I am amused by all of the other comments, by people far more witty than I. I love this comic so much.
Yay! Shadow wont eat things that talk! Haha
aaand there’s Shadow.
Will his appearance be off-screen only, I wonder?
So, decision time, Digger. Go home for real, or stay in this weird place with these weird friends…who love you?
Why not both? She can go with Trader Manuel, and on the way home decide she likes adventuring with him better than dealing with wombat legalities…
YES! <3
There is a distinct possibility Shadowlescent developed a sense of humour, to ask in his old way like that. I’m sure it learned a lot about what to eat and not eat.
A most excellent capper to Digger’s adventures. She made friends who care about her, and will take that chance to help her. Yayyyyy!
Boy, we needed the laugh, too.
Surka and Shadow have been at work, I see…
… I read that as Bandersnatch remembering shadow the first time they met. Explains why Manuel didn’t say Shadow asked him to turn back as well
I should probably ask – are those meant to be huge teeth, or a sideways mouth (like an arthropod)? I’d always assumed the latter, but I’m just curious.
Trader Manuel looks like a Womble to me.
Oooohhh, Shadow! Trolls! Good for them!
Awwwwwwwww! “It was very polite.” Yay Shadowlescent! It’s a conspiracy of oddness! With Trolls!
Yay for Surka and Shadowlescent!
I was also wondering why Trader Manuel is a bird now, I don’t remember him having that beak or handerchief before.
I sense the Bandersnatch learned to speak the same place as the Skin Lizards. Does anyone else find it odd that Trader Manuel refers to the Bandersnatch in the singular, “…Into its heads,” but the heads speak as though they were individuals, “It asked if we could talk.”

So much happiness!!!!
Hmm.
Niall’s got a point–that sounds like Shadowchild, not Shadowlescent. Therefore, I’m wondering: Was that our Shadow, or one of its new students?
… and I’m not sure which would be cooler.
Either way, this is perfect. “Know that you are loved, burrower.”
*SQUEEEEEEE* SO MUCH EXCITED!!
This is a Crowning Moment of Awesome, one that I didn’t expect.
Thank you!
***DELIGHT!***
More Trolls, More Surka, More Shadow!

BWAHAHA! And Digger was just thinking, “Gee, it’s so quiet– no trolls or shadows or anything…” Gods, I love this.

Yay. Don’t know if they’re being friendly or just want Digger gone.

They look like snail teeth.

@MadamAtom: If you’re talking aquatic snails, then they have gills. I’m sure you can google gastropod respiratory systems.

When does this chapter end and the next chapter start?
We all hope that is the case WorkingVolition, but Ursula herself has said that this comic is ending soon.
I just hope there’s some sort of compensation for the trader’s loss of time and trade. Doesn’t look like he’s TOO upset though…
It’s always been dusty, musty travelling on long journeys over unpaved trail…and then there’s bandersnatch butt (single, plural?) pretty near ur air intake…filtration is a precaution of a wise traveller.
Yay!! He’s back!!! I knew Ursula couldn’t end the story without Shadow-teen showing up again…
