Digger

Song Coyote, if you’re reading, please drop me an e-mail! I have your sketchbook, but it has no contact info, and I want to make sure I draw the right thing in it…

  1. SongCoyote says:

Hello Ursula! I responded to you via LJ but will get a separate e-mail to you as well. Thanks for the shout-out, even if for such an embarassing reason (I thought I had put my address in the boox, but obviously I was mistaken).

Talk to you soon one way or another!

    Light and laughter,
    SongCoyote

  2. Sparky Lurkdragon says:

I can only say, “Eeee! :D”

Gotta love the final climb to the climax. So much awesome in the wings, so many updates to spread them over.

  3. Tindi says:

Ed is? Yay/ohnoes/eee all at the same time!

  4. Sage says:

Oh god if this winds up being some sacrifice story where Ed dies I’m going to be SO MAD at you.

  5. Silverfish says:

He says it like it’s so obvious.
    <3 Ed

  6. Venhax says:

Not gonna lie: I let out a little “waiiii” at this. :3

  7. contrary says:

Whatever’s in that wrapping, I hope it’s as least as effective as Digger’s rock pick.

  8. Leela says:

This can only end in sadness. >:(

  9. Kevinbunny says:

Yay! Ed! But… yeah.. this is gonna be heartbreaking at some point…

Still, it may be that only one whose name has been eaten and gained a new one is able to defeat the bad guys, etc. Gods are funny that way.

Just as well, I suppose.. He’s not gonna be safe when Jahlm shows up.. he’s not gonna be safe when the Hunters show up… Might as well go and be lucky.

  10. Zomziekitten says:

Please, please, please let Ed be a great hero who earns back his name and his tank in the tribe…

  11. Lindale says:

    What Tindi said!

  12. BlueAloe says:

    *jaw drops*

Okay, I didn’t see THAT coming.

  13. smjjames says:

Not to mention his knowledge of the tribes lore could be useful.

  14. Hunter says:

Am I the only one to think that a sword is in that bundle?

  15. reepicheep says:

I seem to recall that when we met Ed, Ursula said that was probably a one-time encounter, unless something else occurred to her. Now it seems she has a definite use in mind for him. Interesting how the story outline changes as we move along.

  16. Werebear says:

Let’s think positive. Maybe this will earn him a new name? Ursula, if you kill off Ed, I’m gonna go all Tunnel 17 on you. >:(

Naaah, not THAT bad, but still.

  17. ShadowChild says:

    What’s a tunnel # 17? Am I a tunnel # 17?

  18. Niall says:

Ed knows STORIES. and gods. And stories about gods. He is the perfect person to go down there – he could even talk sense to the, um, skin people. And the cold servants are his people, if removed. He knows SV, and is probably one of the few who could resist its pull. Digger is the other. Team Supreme!

…and yeah, tragedy will struck somewhere. DAMMIT!

  19. Hawk says:

I foresee a lot of terribleness.

The bundle is either a sword or a set of paintbrushes…Ed has killed before, he’s been living all alone for some time. I imagine he’s better equipped to defend himself than you might expect. At this point I don’t see him going all “grrr violence” on everything, certainly…but then again violence wouldn’t be the only answer anyway.

How DOES one kill a god?

  20. TekServer says:

Yeah, there might be a sword in Ed’s bundle. But more important is his skin-painting gear, especially some purple ink! The skin-lizards are going to be so happy … πŸ˜‰

    Don’t forget to VOTE! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/10180/default.aspx
And you artistic types, send Ursula some fan-art; maybe she’ll put it on TWC as a vote incentive! (I have no control over Ursula, so I can’t promise anything; this is just a suggestion … )

  21. smjjames says:

It looks a bit small to be a sword, so maybe paintbrushes?

Still, as I said before, he knows all about the tribes lore and mythology. He seems like the type to have been an apprentice to the tribes healer/wiseman,Owl Caller, if he hadn’t been exiled.

  22. WorkingVolition says:

Frankly, I think it more likely that Digger would self-sacrifice sooner than Ed. It would be unexpected and make the story so much more interesting. Then perhaps Ed could journey to wherever Digger came from and tell Digger’s family/loved ones about what happened. Perhaps more epic-ness could ensue.

  23. Glenn (a different one) says:

Were I to guess what’s in the bundle, I’d have to say a baguette. I mean, what else would you take into the bowels of the earth on a god-slaying picnic? Besides some wine, fresh fruit, and a good cheese, of course…

And like so many others here, I fear for Ed…sooner or later, the bill for redemption comes, and let’s face it, Ed IS Hero-material…

  24. brushtail says:

@ those who are fearing for Ed.

I think perhaps this will be a chance for ed to earn a new name, or at least do something that will reconcile himself with his tribe. ed’s teeth are sharp enough for this i think.

  25. jassius says:

I forsee Ed tatooing the ancient god’s liver πŸ˜›
    It is good being useful!

OK. I suppose Ed may find a way to recover his name down there.

  26. librarianlord says:

    Noooo Ed! πŸ™

  27. Hooray for Ed!

    Of COURSE he’s coming along.

  28. KFox says:

If this were much else besides “Digger” I would say Ed was toast. No one would miss him (cept Digger herself obviously).

You know you want to be original and have him live.

    … Or something. (‘Dawww Ed!)

  29. JewelWolf says:

I forsee two outcomes for this:
    1. Ed does very poorly as a warior and: A. comes close to injury, B. comes close to death, or C. dies.
    2. Ed proves himself to be one super-awesome-badass-amazing fighter and helps save the day, redeeming himself.

  30. Siege says:

    @JewelWolf

Remember, that the *most* awesome super-badass fighter never has to touch their opponent to win. Aikido, the art of never needing to fight. πŸ™‚

  31. JewelWolf says:

    @Seige
You mean like with guns? :XD jk,jk

  32. angelisa says:

seeing as the bigger and tougher something is, the more likley it is to be defeated by linguistic tricks, I think ed will ahve to be the one to finish off SGV. Nobody can kill a demon, and ed is nobody.
or, maybe he’ll jsut recrit a skin-lizard army wiht his painting skillz

  33. Rowan says:

My first reaction was “Ed can use a sword? What!?!”

  34. Ravenswing says:

Ut-oh, I think there’s a black raven hovering over poor Ed’s shoulder. DAMN.

  35. Cavanaugh says:

Come on, guys! Give Ursula some credit for not being so predictable!

    …Please?

  36. mouse says:

I think Ed is going to get ….well, not a new name, he’s Ed now, right? but an honorable return to his tribe. And he is going to be essential to put all the pieces together – _we’ve_ figured out who the undead god is, but I don’t think Digger et al. have. Ed is going to understand how it all fits into the story he told, and that is going to be essential to completing the quest.

and yeah – i think he’s going to make the skin-lizards ecstatic by painting them.

  37. Rhio2k says:

Hope Ed’s as fierce as a female in battle…

  38. SilverTwilight says:

I wonder if they’ll leave before Grim Eyes is able to get to the temple?

  39. Mark Antony says:

I can think of no better combination of characters to go down that hole than Digger and Ed. For one thing, Ed is the first mortal Digger encountered when she first arrived here. For another, Ed has probably shaped Digger’s growth as a character over the course of the story more than any of the rest of the supporting cast. Also, I totally foresee a Big Damn Heroes moment from Grim Eyes. We might even get to see Ed go all Papa Bear protective of her!

  40. Kayru says:

    Ed had better nt die.

But if we see a return of Shadowthing then there’s nothing to worry about. =3

  41. Bartimaeus says:

    Well.

    This is it.

  42. TekServer says:

    > Hope Ed’s as fierce as a female in battle…

Biologically unlikely. More importantly, though, I doubt that straight up fighting will have much to do with the Big Final Showdown. After all, though there has been some fighting along the way, it’s never been the main focus of the storyline.
It seems to me far more likely that brains, courage, and especially common sense are the heroic traits that will win the day in this storyline. And (if I’m right) Digger and Ed (and even Grim Eyes and Surka if they make it down there in time) seem exceptionally well equipped for THAT kind of struggle.

(My $0.02; take it or leave it.)

  43. JewelWolf says:

    @Tekserver
You’re right. I think I know the reason for that: black and white battle scenes are particularly difficult to make. Seriously. You try it. XD

  44. cheshta99 says:

Even though I know he’s not a warrior, to me at least, this has foreshadowing almost like a soldier going to regain some lost dignity or honor.

It also has a little telling of the old phrase, “Come home with your shield or on it.” It could just be me but I’m, possibly, seeing Ed giving his life to save Digger and her bring his body back, then going to his old tribe and forcing them to give him the burial he deserves.

I hope Ed doesn’t die, but I can see it happening.

  45. Barry says:

Bizarre. I had a comment here yesterday, and someone has even commented on it, but it’s not here now. I wonder if it was removed as a good-guess spoiler?

  46. smjjames says:

You guys are forgetting that he had to survive alone for 18 or so years, so he would have to know some fighting skills. Survival wise at least.

  47. Lucius Appaloosius says:

THEME MUSIC! We need some serious heroic theme music here! Where’s John Williams? 7@=Q

  48. TekServer says:

    @JewelWolf

Ha! No takers here. I can barely draw a decent stick figure with the aid of a ruler and a coin to trace …

    πŸ˜‰

  49. The Procrastinator says:

Hmm. So we’ve got Digger – a (honorary) member of the “orthodox” Hyena clan that looked to She-Is Fiercer – and Ed – one whose name has been eaten in the same way as What-Was-He-Is. Given that Digger was ‘only’ a Wombat when she visited the Chained One earlier, will her new status change her reception? Or will Ed’s status influence the Masked Ones?
