I think this may be the start of a bad turn of events. Most of Jhalm’s problems are in one room together. That could lead to a “One Size Fits All” solution. I don’t think Jhalm is inherently bad, but he doesn’t have time to waste on a meddling statue, a argumentative wombat, an insane acolyte, and a hyena so bad that even the other hyenas don’t want him. So Digger needs to come up with a plan ASAP even if all it is, is to diversify the assets.
And now we get the amusing image of old librarians with painted skin aided by flying mice, with painted fur. Explaining that one in a hundred years time will be interesting.
Which tribe? Snoutgod-tribe or Ed’s old tribe?
Interesting that Ed considers this lack so important. It implies that the position of skin-painter is more than just decorative – I (and, from her expression, Digger) had been thinking of it as akin to “hairdresser” or “manicurist”, but it may be more akin to “spiritual armorer”…

Otookee, Nespin, etc.: Hyenas don’t appear to shave, so the “skins” being painted wouldn’t be attached to anything still alive. A carnivorous society will have a lot of hide to use for tents, banners, clothes, and anything else they can use it for. Ed’s role was of all-purpose artist. And a culture needs art.
I love Ed, especially now with his “I’m so appalled!” response to Digger about Statue’s tribe not having a Skin-Painter. XD I can hear Ed whispering that just a LITTLE too loudly to Digger…

Actually I’d got the notion that Ed’s position in the old tribe was pretty darn important, not only for his notoriety as being “lucky” but for the fact of his skin painting. I’ll have to look through the archives again but it did seem as if he had a couple of “customers” where he was painting _on them_ . But I’m not positive about that yet.
However it is clear that he is very much an artist. It’s also clear that paintings are extremely important to the hyenas. And for the last who-knows-how-many seasons, Ed’s had no one to paint for…and now, a whole tribe with no skin painter?!
Also just an observation, but if “skin painting” is permanent, then it could be a tattoo or some form of dye for the fur. I got the impression that Grim Eyes has a tattoo on her face.
I seem to recall Ed’s skinpainting profession to, in fact, be the equivalent of tattooing, so I don’t think he’d have many human customers. I’m sure he uses a permenant dye, so the most he could do for a human is make his/her hair stylish and unique. However, I’m sure he could work wonders on the flying mice.

Also, his talent and position resulted with his pairing with the tribe’s pre-eminent hunter… which, eventually led to his downfall when their first borne child died and his mate was not able to get over the loss, especially given Ed’s luck in being a surviving first borne – a rare occurrence. Blah blah blah blah… Blah… Blah. Ed happy = good.

Ed painted Hyena skin as well – think Henna tattoos, not permanent. You can only make an actual tattoo by cutting into the skin and leaving dye under the growth layer of the skin (although IMO he did both, I think we’ve seen hyenas with tattoos and warpaint for hunting).
Think back to digger visiting Ed’s cave post-describing evil to Shadowchild, one of Ed’s examples of good was “skin painter is painting skin of little one, no reason” – so I imagine we are talking more like face paint than indelible tattoos.
Exindiv, you might want to go back and review the story about Ed and his mate. You are close on a few details, but not remembering correctly on a few important ones. I won’t point out what I think was incorrect, since I haven’t reviewed it in a while, and my memory may be somewhat off.
Yeah, I think that the painting he did was strictly temporary, but also of a deeply symbolic nature. Cleansing, good fortune, bountiful hunts, fertility, that sort of stuff. He’s not quite a shaman, but he’s definately on the spiritual track.

‘Painted by him’ has a few possible meanings. One with a little verification in the comic is that he paints them onto skins; they’re ‘painted by him’, much as he painted Digger onto the cave wall. That little scene in which he states it’s a form of immortality, that it’s a way to ensure that people are not forgotten, even when everything is dust, the paintings still remain and people can remember.
I needed that. Ed’s so darn cute, because it really is that serious a matter to him. How on Earth can you have proper warriors with bare skin? That’s like a s’more with no cracker!
I’m shamefully disappointed that Ed didn’t get the snot beaten out of him. It’d make the eventually beating of Jhalm that much more delicious, and Ed’s woobieness would be increased a thousandfold.

He said he wanted to leave behind a legacy for people to find, in not so many words. Temporary paintings don’t do that very well.
On a completely unrelated note, I love how many awesome fans you have, Ursula. We’re all getting technical about a character that originally (according to a comment you made, I believe) was only for filler stuff =D Go us for being nerdy!
Also: Ed= my favoritest favorite of all favored webcomic/comic characters. He beats The Stump from LinT, aright!? That’s pretty dang epic!! 😀 Ed. :3
To drag it up again, tattooing and painting are often linked with either shamanism or healing in many cultures dating back to the copper age if not beyond… Utzi the “ice man” found frozen in an Italian glacier since the copper age had tattoos running Parrnell to areas of his back which we know from x-rays and cat scans of the body would have pained him, the tattooing seems to have been ether a guide for healers or perhaps the tattooing needles functioned as some sort of acupuncture. it’s an archaeology weasel word, “ritual” and “ritual specialist” a worse one as it can cover pretty much anything, but i think it’s fair to apply it in Ed’s case.
