I don’t know why, but I get the feeling Ganesh has some rather important/ominous news for the party. How one can get that impression from a polite greeting, I don’t know.
Actually… I’m wondering if Surka is commenting on Ganesh’s generous snout. A god just isn’t up to snuff for a shrew if they don’t have a respectable sniffer. Just my random first impression :D. Btw, I’m glad to see the statue too, I would have been sad if it was gone or damaged.
I find myself relieved to learn that the Ganesh statue is still there, apparently intact, and not hacked to bits. *whew*
Have I mentioned how much I adore Surka? No? Well, I like Surka so well that even though my identity as a magpie is already firmly established, I wish I could be a Surka, too. Squeeee!
I think what fills me with foreboding is “It is good that you have returned.” Coming from Ganesh, that’s likely to be a simple statement of fact, not a pleasantry. “It is good that you have returned–If you had lingered on the road another couple of minutes, I shudder to think what would have happened to you/us/this town/the whole weird vampire-squash-begetting world.”
glad i’m not the only one relieved to see ganesh is still well and good… but yeah, “it is good that you have returned” can so easily be the lead-in to “because i really need you to go tackle this whole other major mess”.
I’m with EveryZig: I think Jhalm is lurking nearby; it’s the kind of thing he does. I’m still waiting with interest to see if Murai is the person that thwacks him one when he does turn up.
And, Ganesh being Ganesh, I think he probably meant his greeting both ways: Murai is one of his people, and I imagine he’s fond of Digger as well. I agree with the “ominous statement is ominous” crowd, though. He does get to the point.
The entire flow and lay out of this page just adds to the suspense, especially since you don’t see Ganesh in the first panel, you have a moment to think that something horrible might have happened.
Is it just me who thinks Ganesh is relieved? As in, ‘It is good that you have returned – it’s been a huge kettle of lobsters round here and I need someone to deal with it. Someone mobile.’
Things have been so tense lately that it makes the viewer think that something has gone horribly, horrible wrong. Indeed, it has – but the kicker is that Digger is under no obligation to do a goddamned thing about it. She has chosen to be horrified and she will likely choose to do something about it. She is no longer a wombat who just wants to go home.
Um… didn’t Ganesh statue used to have both of his tusks intact? am i the only one noticing the broken tusk in the second panel? i went back to check, but they are mostly let out of the close up panels and they change of lenght a lot, i’m not sure anymore… chech http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=7 and http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=498
Lica, I’m fairly sure the Statue acquired his broken tusk quite a while back, and without any fanfare. If I remember correctly, apparently it’s part of Ganesh’s canonical legend in our universe, but I don’t know the details.
Surka appreciates compliments, I see.
Actually, Surka may be commenting on the fact that ol’ Ganesh is usually depicted with a little rat at his feet…
A god that likes warriors AND rats? No wonder Surka likes Ganesh.
Wonder if Jhalm (or some minion) is lurki ng in the shadows of the temples.
That’s one of the things I’ve always loved about our Ganesh – he’s always polite!
“My dead ancestor says hi.”
(snort)
I do love Ganesh. I just realized how much I’ve missed him. Or is it her?
> A god that likes warriors AND rats? No wonder Surka likes Ganesh.
Surka is NOT a rat! She’s a shrew. Big difference.
π
Surka likes Ganesh because he is polite and compimentary to the humble as well as the mighty.
Humble meaning Digger, mighty meaning Surka, of course!

You may well be right.

It’s good to see that Ganesh is okay. I was afraid we were going to come into the temple to discover that He’d been removed.
Up to snuff… God statue with a large sniffer…
S’nout right, that!
Giiiihihihihi!
Anyways, point is, I’m glad to see Ganesh is still there too. I was worried.

*Collapses with relief* Oh, man, I am so glad Ganesh is okay. I totally expected him to be in pieces or something similarly horrible.

Woah!
That is a wombat in a hurry!
I suppose politeness is not a must when warning about an upcoming cave in. π

He has the shrew seal of approval. Ganesh’s not-exactly-life is now complete.
> … and I need someone to deal with it. Someone mobile …
Yeah, chances are pretty good that Ganesh-statue still hasn’t mastered that “moving about on a slime trail” trick …
π
Surely the statue is not the motivating force behind the attack on the hyenas…
Oh, man, I’ve just noticed something. Ganesh’s tusk isn’t there. 0.o
Someone sawed off a god’s tooth.
This ought to get interesting.
Of course not! That would be superstupid.Ganesh is a GOD remember? (a statue of a god actually but still!)

So, tell me if you’ve heard this one before. A Vombatiform marsupial, a terrestrial member of order Insectivoria and a deity walk into a pub…
I just caught the “a good time was had by all” just now. I know, I’m dense. I giggled anyway.
