  1. Kevin says:

2nd pannel is exactly what my response would have been. Also, Herne is great, heh.

  2. Gnollbard says:

Oh god… I love Grim-Eyes more and more every comic.

  3. Lurkerlynne says:

Huzzah for normalcy! Or the state of Weird that passes for it. πŸ˜€

Also, was *Grim Eyes* trying to hug Herne?! o_O

  4. Zamael says:

I still think Herne should act more manly around Grim-Eyes. Basically give her a taste of her own medicine.

  5. Rhio2k says:

She’d just think it was cute, like watching your girlfriend try to put on a tough front when you know she’s so soft that just the thought of squirrels going hungry makes her weep. She also might think he was trying to look cute on purpose to attract her, which would lead to awkward moments when they’re alone, and Grim Eyes doesn’t have to worry about what Digger and Murai would think.

  6. Claire says:

Aw, Grim Eyes is trying to be sensitive. πŸ˜€

  7. Dave says:

    Emphasis on the “trying.”

  8. TΓ‘ssia says:

Almost forgot how much I liked Herne πŸ˜€

  9. Hunter says:

Digger could probably use a hug right now…

  10. Prismcat says:

Grim Eyes still doesn’t get it. I’d wonder if she ever will, but it’s not her story. Of course, she doesn’t realize what she’s doing wrong, and she’s not asking what she’s doing wrong, and no one is leaping to tell her, so…

Or maybe she does know what she’s doing? Is this like the equivalent of the frog down the back of the shirt? Never can tell with her.

  11. JewelWolf says:

Digger already got her hug from Grim Eyes. By the way, I love her attempts at friendly social interaction. It makes me think of people that are normally stern and painfully honest to everyone that, when presented with someone handicapped, either mentally or phisically, will try their best to be nice. I’m not sure if I worded that in a way that’s quite understandable, so let me know if I need to rephrase.

  12. TekServer says:

I don’t think Grim Eyes was actually trying to hug Herne; she was just talking to him. Herne was (apparently) trying to preemptively forestall any attempt at a hug …

Those two totally deserve each other …
    πŸ˜‰

  13. Dominique says:

Aaaaaah. The utterly dysfunctional flirtation (on the part of Grim Eye’s, at least) is back. Yay!

  14. jassius says:

Aww. Isn’t it lovely when friends who’ve been apart get together again?

Considering the effects of Digger’s last hyena meal, her stomach must have twitched on the “there will be hyena giblets for dinner” piece of conversation πŸ˜€

  15. Rowanmdm says:

For some reason Herne’s last line in the last panel came out with a Scottish brogue in my head…I wonder if he’ll sound that way to me from now on?

  16. Joan says:

I distinctly got the impression Grim Eyes was trying to cop a feel–not so much an attempt at sensitivity as seduction–I think she’s been underground too long.

  17. Mad Luc says:

….okay, anyone *else* shipping Grim Eyes/Herme? I’ve shipped *more* impossible pairs.

  18. Sil says:

Not quite shipping, but I’ve thought from the start that Grim Eyes is trying to flirt with Herne. >_>

  19. Chip Uni says:

You’re not the only one, Mad Luc. I think that Grim Eyes / Herne already sound like a long-married couple!

  20. Zamael says:

Oh come on, Luc, it’s practically canon.

  21. Steelcat says:

I am getting here a bit late in the game but, I have caught up and I must say I like your work!

  22. JewelWolf says:

I’m going to kick myself for being so inappropriate, but… Rule #34.

  23. Les says:

So…. I’ve just read the whole “Digger” in 2 days… my brain is… numb… but I love it! I love it so much.
What I love about reading big chunks of comics at a time is, that you sometimes can see the transition in art-style. But this time, I couldn’t really tell, when you changed the way you drew.
But in any style I saw, you used the lines so well – I am jealous as hell! If you look closely, you see all the loose white wiggle-lines and big strokes. But if you are not looking for them, you can fill the blanks to sheer awesome “realistic” pictures.
Thank you so much for the comic – keep it up!

  24. Jessica says:

Oh, Grim Eyes, you’re such an adorable hyena woman.
I literally laughed so hard I snorted at that last panel. And it’s totally 11pm here. And my apartment walls are thin. *giggle*
Oh what the neighbors must think.

  25. Siege says:

And don’t forget Rule 35; they act as a pair.

  26. KNO3 says:

Well Jessica, I’m thinking that they think you are having more fun than they are.

  27. Marrock says:

That first panel just makes me want to hit Herne in the face with a shovel.

  28. TekServer says:

    > That first panel just makes me want to hit Herne in the face with a shovel.

Why? I love Digger & Grim Eyes, but ShadowChild was far more entertaining company, especially from Herne’s perspective …

    πŸ˜‰

  29. JewelWolf says:

    Yes, Siege, #35, too.

  30. 12Many says:

Maybe its because I’m young and inexperienced in the ways of the world, but I can’t discern the meaning of the second panel. I mean, what is she thinking? How does she feel? “*snort*”? I’d feel like hitting something after the first panel. But Digger?…?????????

  31. TekServer says:

That *snort* is eloquent in its simplicity. It expresses at least the following, and possibly much more:

    – Slight disgust at Herne’s lack of sensitivity
    – Mild humor in realization that Herne is at least partially kidding
    – Defense mechanism against the still raw feelings surrounding Shadow’s departure
    – A response to Herne’s words directly, indicating his company is no great prize either
    – A thoroughly practical method for expelling tunnel-dust from the nose and sinuses that has no relevance whatever to Herne’s words
    – And probably much more that I’m missing …

    πŸ˜‰

  32. KNO3 says:

    *snort*

  33. Requiem says:

Sudden thought: if we follow the Hyenas’ beliefs, then the one who defeats Sweetgrass-Voice will have to do the ceremony (full version, since it’s a god and all) and eat the liver of He-Is. If I remember correctly, the family of Skull Ridges was present at the ritual and ate some of her liver along after Digger to bring the fallen hyena’s strength (or whatever) into the family.

If this happens, will She-Is-Fiercer come down to the tribe and eat some of the liver as well since He-Is was her husband? Will *every* Hyena be brought to in to eat a bit of the liver since He-Is was one of their gods? Would this include all the Eaten as well? Am I just asking pointless questions since He-Is was Eaten and thus no longer a ‘person’ so the whole ritual doesn’t apply?

  34. Rags says:

    Worst wombat impression ever. πŸ˜‰

  35. BunnyRock says:

Mad Luc.. all the rest of you… can we please try not to turn this in to a shipping war. My guardian angel and internal editor, El-ahrairant, will throw a wobbly if i get drawn into another shipping war. And JewelWolf, and as for rule 34 shame on you! : )

Although… it has to be said I do now have the utterly mad urge to try and make erotic Surka/ the statue of Ganesha fan art. Dammit! There’s a mental image I will never get out of my mind! I was half tempted to, and here is the important bit, JOKINGLY suggest Surka/Ed during strip 307 just because the idea of them speed dating would be so charmingly awkward and it would stop Ed/Digger ships this page spawned, which given the whore fatherly treatment Ed gives Digger never sat right with me….

    http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=307

…but now, now the image of that shrew standing on one of the statues ears and hugging his face in the incense heavy atmosphere and the warm flickering of the temple lights and saying “you’re my everything” WILL NOT DIE! Arrrrrggg! I’m A fangirl! It finally happened! I’ll have to quit my gents five-a-side football team!

WHAT HAVE I CREATED!? WHAT AM I! WHAT AM I!

  36. BunnyRock says:

BunnyRock has encountered an illegal operation and needs to shut down. If this problem persist, contact your systems administrator and get them to only permit BunnyRock to run in a shipping free environment with plentiful mind bleach.

  37. TekServer says:

    πŸ˜†

*reaches over and presses BR’s reset button*

    There ya go …

    πŸ˜‰

  38. rueyeet says:

If, in hyena society, submission = flirting and prey = submission, then Grim Eyes probably can’t help but respond to Herne the way she does: by trying to help and protect him, whether he needs it or not.

And I -still- love the comment that it provides on why chivalry isn’t necessarily a good thing.
