I agree a hyena’s shoulder is not the most obvious place to seek comfort, but it seemed to work fine on this ocassion.
So the gang is almost set to go for a new day. I’m waiting to see how things develop from this point. Not like I can yet forsee the way the story is leading.
I wonder how Murai and Grim Eyes will take it. Even Grim Eyes must admit that Shadowchild was an invaluable to the team, like when Murai and Digger fell down that crack in the ice. No matter who’s point of view you look at, this is tragic.
Was that a blanket she was wearing before? She’s wearing her coat in the last panel…
I can’t help but notice how similar she looked to her ancestor when she was wearing the blanket.
Was this a moment where she said “okay, I’m gonna need my coat to explain this.” or is there some other reason she changed?
I think she was dressing as she told them what happened. Besides, the coat doesn’t require that Digger hang onto it to maintain modesty…
Wait, she’s a wombat. What modesty?
Maybe it’s wombat taboo to show one’s back fur….?
Heh I think she woke up with her blanket/towel (who doesnt travel without a towel?) and SC called her outside while she was still waking. Coming back, after a long chat with SC, and after losing some control in front of Grim Eyes, she no doubt felt in need of clothing – a jacket if not pants. Dressing is a way to reassemble herself, to regain some control – and completely natural in the flow of events as well.
i’m very happy that Shadowchild has gone off to civilize the other demons, and it seems quite nice that Digger and Shadowchild’s paths crossed so serendipitously.
It was definitely beneficial to both Digger and SC, if not in the ways we might have expected. The pain that has just been suffered – by both of them – is simply an unavoidable side effect of a beneficial process. In Digger’s case, the letting go (something that’s especially hard when you haven’t really admitted to yourself that you were attached in the first place); in SC’s case, of course, the growing up.
And yes her changing to the coat makes perfect sense.
And “travel with a towel” : niiiiiice Hitchhiker reference there, Valerian 🙂
One thing I do love about comics is how it’s so easy to recap three weeks’ worth of exposition and emotion in two sentences in a gray box. (Novels don’t have it so good.)
As far as the jacket, well I’d say 1) she’s an engineer type, so pockets and b) it’s like Linus’ security blanket from Peanuts – it’s her comfort zone. Plus, just looking at Digger in the final panel, I’d say there was an “off stage” moment where at the very least Digger got some coffee!
And: A) ALWAYS carry a towel and 2) DON’T PANIC! 😉
my prior assumption regarding the blanket and coat: She (Digger) was wrapped in the blanket while asleep, and has now let it drop, revealing the coat beneath — no “changing” or very conscious choice needed.
Fantastic update as always. I can’t imagine it being easy for her to tell the story after just living it. Stay strong, Digger!

*EDIT: okay looking back they look more similar when both wearing coats.

It might just be a chilly morning and, as it warms up, she’s ditching the super-warm blanket for her coat/vest.

Was it serendipity?
It means good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries.

To be fair, it wasn’t really Grim Eyes’ shoulder. It was farther down, closer to the chest/stomach area.
