I just scrolled up and down this page a few times to test this, and it is absolutely accurate: every single time I look at this scene, a shiver runs down my spine. No matter how many times, every time.
I never thought the term “Digger-Mousie” could be so forceful. o_o
I probably won’t go back and reread Digger until I catch up entirely, but this scene has me tempted to do so prematurely, just to reread Ed’s character in light of this recent arc.
You know, I bet her conscience kicked her over to Ed because it knew he’d put the starch back in her spine. He’s pretty good about putting things in perspective for her. 🙂
Having read the whole thing through, and in the least spoiler-ish way possible, I’d like to say that this is probably one of the most moving and powerful arcs in the entire story, period.
Also, has anyone else noticed that Ed’s word-bubble on the page overlaps the the top of the final panel, where Digger is at her most resolved? I think that may have been deliberate.
You’re probably right; I get the impression that Ursula is almost always deliberately awesome. Though I’m sure she has been accidentally awesome once or twice – like when she first conceived of Ed.
😉
BTW, in case anyone is wondering, the “shiver” effect I described here earlier still works. Every time.
I imagine that last frame was accompanied by a snort as Digger picks up her resolve and puts it back on.
And personal cost is put aside…like the groaning, complaining, stomping…
Wow (again).

To me this is the most moving and powerful arc in the entire story so far.
I agree with chesta, this comic is humourous and compelling.I’m excited about reading the rest of the archive
I like Digger at the bottom. Surprise… sadness… resolve.
(reaches for tissues) Wow!

*jumps onto the “Ursula-is-awesome” bandwagon*

Reading through this a second time.
Just like the first time, I get chills and tears through this arc, most strongly on this page.
10 years later … yup. Still shivers.
