It’s interesting to see how far Boneclaw Mother’s depiction has changed from the first glimpse of her as a massive shadow with eyes from last chapter’s end. In panel 2, she almost looks cartoonish – it seems like a fun, subtle little way of showing that by this time, she’s no longer a threatening figure to Digger.
Yeah. I dunno if even the other, female elders would dare talk to her quite like that. I mean, they question her decisions, but Owl Caller has just questions her, which is quite different.
“One /would/ hate to think so” (emphasis mine). I think I’m really starting to like Owl Caller, he and Boneclaw Mother are wavering back and forth on the danger/friendliness matrix (and again, remember that the two axes do not have a direct inverse relation. See Shadowchild, for example).

I also find the subtlety of Owl Caller’s standing up to BoneClaw Mother to be wonderful. Deferential, yet resolved; perfect!

‘Doh. I’m special. I meant “has just questioned”.
Of course I’m doing it lightly! Was there ever any doubt about that?
Right at the end there, he reminded me of Willikins, Vimes’s butler.
Oooooo they had polite word fight! The hardest kind to understand
