Apparently, metal birdies are vulnerable to… raw damage. Their defense must be pretty rotten, though. This is the first time I’ve seen trolls involved in a fight, and nobody’s used AOLspeak YET! Well, the trolls weren’t really involved in the fighting part, but they did enter the farum.
Diggy Doo, time to take off their masks! It’s… A HYENA! Jinkies!
The difference between the vampire squash and the hyenas, linda, is that the squash not only outnumbered them, but the squash were QUITE willing to be kamikaze, while the hyenas have more sense (generally) (no insult to honor intended).
I’m more bothered by the vampire squash putting them down because, even in context, it seems a bit too goofy for the defeat of tireless, gliding, undead (no body heat, according to the Skins) servants of a dying god.
But I do like the callback in principle, at least. And the fact that the trolls aren’t shown to be violent. So really, not much else that could have saved them, except for maybe the Veiled.
The squash taking out the bird guys wasn’t really all that far-fetched, if you consider that (at least in a few panes) that appeared to be a fairly large field.
Granted that a few, or even a few dozen, vampire squash would pose no threat to the cold servants and little enough threat to Digger, Surka and the Trolls. But an entire field full, including the big watermelon commented on earlier and squash probably numbering in the hundreds or thousands, could be extremely dangerous.
I hate to sound even geekier than usual, but since it looks like the Cold Ones were wearing plate armor, damage type would matter in taking them down. The hyenas were all armed with piercing spears, which can only do damage if they penetrate, and stone spear-tips wouldn’t get through metal. Bludgeoning, however, would still do damage, since the shock would get through mostly intact. (mace vs. plate)
I am pretty sure some spoiler in the comments ruined this reveal for me,
that, or someone really smart figured it out ahead of time,
and I noticed other things that made it obvious.
Not sure at this point …..
Well.. either decendants of the ones who followed He-Is, or the same ones that actually did follow them (seeing as they are undead, or something, and all). I kind of suspected the God was He-Is from the moment I saw the “dead” god though.
The hyenas might not actually be undead. We’ve assumed that they were because of the no body heat comments by the lizards but they metal armour could be masking the heat
Ok who am i trying to kid, you don’t go around drinking a dead gods blood for time immemorial without *something* going ptoooie inside you
Called who the servants were back at “fiercer one’s children”. It remains to be seen if the dead god was once what he-is became and if the masked servants were not, in fact, the cold servants.
Have the Masked Ones actually been ‘officially’ referred to as the Cold Ones? Could be that they’re the Warm Ones, and the Cold Ones are something altogether worse (if I remember the Skins’ forebodings correctly).
OK, I’m not at all observant and/or my memory is/was terrible. Digger called them Cold Servants herself. But since we haven’t seen any ‘warmer’ servants yet, and she wasn’t exactly sticking around to take details, there is still hope!
Actually, there was something seen that could be described as “warmer” servants; When Digger took Murai into the cave before, there were (what appeared to be) live lizards pulling on the ropes to keep the heart pumping.
I can’t believe no one’s done this:
Digger: Jinkies! It was old hyena Greyclaw*!
Greyclaw: And I would have gotten away with it, if it weren’t for you meddling kids and your shrew!
Huh. That was…unexpected
Something I suspected the first time I read through this comic. But of course I loved having my suspicion confirmed. (:
i still find it hard to believe that a whole pack of hyenas couldn’t stop these guys… yet a field of vampire squash totally OWNED them
YAY PUNS!

Yes yes! I suspected that too, (but I was never able to read this part of the comic)

“The blood of our master sustains us.”
I think that may have something to do with how the vampire squash put them down.
Ditto rika. And now I feel very differently about them referring to their kin as “fiercer’s daughters.”

This makes perfect sense, if you think about it. They are the descendents of He-is and his followers.
Well if you ask me, it makes perfect sense that the undead are most easily bested by other undead.
I had suspected this for a while.
Most strongly after they started talking about the “children of the fierce one”.
Actually, that would make the dead god… oh dear.
I must be dumber than a wet rock. Didn’t see this coming….the hyena part. That said…….i’m pretty suspicious of the dead god now.

*gasp*
uh oh
gah why must I READ comments? IF this turns out to be true,,, I will be sad… I didn’t see it coming

Excellent point, TheLivingNick. I was wondering about that myself
I knew it!
*gasp* now that’s drama

Squash zergling rush? I guess it works…

*Not a spoiler, just a made up hyena name.
Zoinks!
We are all completely blown away by this stunning revelation. Wow. Hyenas. Really? Like the tribe? Huh.
