There’s a similarly arranged set of panels and word bubbles in one of the later issues of Scud: The Disposable Assassin…which I only mention because it is awesome, though in a completely different way from Digger.
No one’s mentioned how disquieting it is to have Digger’s tunnel dug out. Maybe because no one else gets that someone’s-watching-one feeling from this page, but rest assured I am creeped out enough for the rest of you.
Mmm, ‘picked clean’, now therre’s a poor choice of worrds, considerring the earlierr crreatures of a homicidal naturre, not to mention theirr fondness for purrple ink. (double arr’s *ahem* ‘R’s in imitation of grim-eyes when she’s angry.)

Digger-of-Unnecessarily-Convoluted-Tunnels would seem to live up to her name.
Sammi: Well, you can’t really dig straight up, can you? Not without something to make a scaffold out of, at least.

It seems the tunnel /may/ have grown in-universe.
