I’m lactose intolerant (or at least have some sort of dairy allergy, it varies from mild displeasure to severe pain and complete, involuntary rejection based on what the dairy product is) and will eat and drink dairy products that I know will make me quite ill for social purposes. It’s not a perfect analogy, but it kind of works, I think.
